I am really upset just rung for a perscription for painkiller which i have been on for about 2 years , my doctor has just retired and the one i have been seeing for the past 2 months was on holiday so i had to speak to another.
She atacked me straight away and told me i am addicted to the painkillers i am taking and she wants me to go on to tramadol . I am not allowed to take NAIDS because they upset my stomach and codine makes me sick and sleep all day.
I would'nt mind but it as taken 9 months of my old doctor telling me not to be silly about taking them as they sort my pain out . She said they are just the same as taking herawin (sorry can't spell it) I am really upset . She as given me them for this month but says i must cut down to 2 halves a day next month ,the doctor i saw for 2 months was quite happy with me having them, i can take 4 day but only ever take 2 or 2and a half because i am worried about getting addicted
. I dont mind taking tramadol if it gets rid of the pain but having googled it that is addictive to .
I am having lots of trouble with pain at the moment with knee, shoulders neck ,foot and i have lost my voice to OA . I could do with out her messing about with the meds at the moment .
I have not got over having my knee replaced 12 months ago and get a lot of pain from that , I have had one hip replaced wish was wonderful but it left me 1 inch shorter on one side which makes me have a lot of back trouble. ....
Anyway rant over just wondered if anyone else has had trouble with horrible doctors . It does help being able to post to you all I am sat here in tears feeling sorry for myself , I will pull myself together and get on with the day . Hope you are all having a pain free day ,not that you will be ,pain seems to go hand in hand with arthritis . ............sandra (alicea)

Sandra, you can cry or moan or rant or whatever on here. We'll be here to support you.As you have got this months sorted out I would try to see the other doc later on and question him about your "addiction"
Surely having to take something to stop the pain is not the same as taking meds for the sake of it.
I could stop taking mine now but I know by tomorrow all the pains surface again - am I an addict too.
The trouble with modern health centres like we have up here you see 1 of 5 different docs each time.I always try to get the same one but its not always possible.
    Chin up my dear

one of my docs said i was 2 cut back on the pain killers as they r adictive i was really upset with her as what else am i meant 2 do about the pains.i went 2 a diff doc and he says if u need pain killers just take them if i am in pain i need the tabs he seems happy enough 2 keep giving them 2 me.i think doc just cant be bothered some times when r in pain they seem 2 think u should go home and grin and bear ur pain with out painkillers.i only ever go 2 see the doc who gives me my tabs i feel he understands as the other one just gave me the impression i was imaginein my pains ,like i would lie about pain..........

I really feel for you Sandra. I have come across this type of "over-zealous" GP myself. I believe that the only way to deal with this type of bullying - cos that`s what it is! - is to stand up to them and let them see that you are not going to be intimidated.

Once you have got over the shock, make an appointment - take someone with you if possible - and get this sorted out once and for all.

During the last few years of my husband`s life, I had to do more than my share of fighting, and I often felt like giving up. One day, a specialist who I had got to know rather well, took me into his office. He told me that he admired my loyalty and tenacity. He also said - and I`ve never forgotten this - to always remember that at the end of the day, it was the patients who were paying their salaries, and we should always think of ourselves as "employers". I hope you will soon feel strong enough to tackle this........Ange.

Thanks to you all just reading your kind messages has helped , my husband is working in the midlands this week so i am feeling on my own with the problem.
The other thing that is getting me down is lossing my voice , they are looking into it and say it is my OA in my voice box and after i have a CT scan they will inject directly into it ,this is really fightening me , I dont know why but it is . I also have had to few people thinking i have tamy flu this week in shops because of my voice and i was sweating with the pain in my back so I was a bit upset anway. believe it or not i am normally quite tough but at the moment i dont seem to be able to bounce back . You are all quite right i must stand up to her when my husband finishes the job in the midlands i will take him in with me . I think i will see someone else and ask why they say I am addicted . thanks again you are all lovely people ..........sandra

    Hi Sandra

Yes others have told me of similar sagas when they see another doc and practically have to beg for their medication when their own gp who knows them and their medical history in much more detail is in perfect agreement with the situation. Your own gp will be back from holiday soon so isn't that the problems solved? Next time you see him, I would let him know what happened and what he suggests in case he is not there another time and you need a repeat.

This doc you spoke to today may have got out of the wrong side of bed, be overworked or have marital problems, but they should not bring their own problems to work with them and take it out on patients.

Don't you have the repeat prescription method whereby you do not have to speak to a doc for more meds every month?

Please don't be upset anymore, this doctor was well out of order. The matter is all above board with your own doctor so you can hold your head up high and if you can, don't waste anymore of your day thinking about this doctor and his unprofessional manner but chat to your own doc next time you see him.

    Chin up,

    Luv

Hi Sandra, don't worry about this doc. I am confident that when you see your usual gp common sense will prevail!!!! Until then try not to worry too much.

Constant pain grinds you down and the extra worry of your voice must be exhausting. I too suffer from the sweats with my neck pain and arthur and I find that a trial and embarrassing.

Keep posting and let us know how you are doing, it helps. Have a good afternoon.

Thanks Elna , As you say the doctor i saw for a couple of months will be back next week so hopefully i can sort it out with her , as you said about the repeat prescription our doctors wont let you have these meds unless you speak to a doctor every time, i think it is mad but thats the way they do it there. I was worried in case the new doctor takes the side of the one i so this morning with her being new to the practise , but if she does i will not just let it go listening to you all it seems it is not that uncommon i need to stand up to her , thanks for your kilnd words i am feeling much better ... sandra

    Hi Sandra
    Pooor poor you :(
    That is awful :(
You must feel so alone without your hubby (I know cause when this kicked off for me mine was in sctoland), but he will be back soon and in the meantime you have us to make sure you feel supported and not so alone.
You WILL win this battle - I am SURE!

Totally agree, how ridiculous, Sandra, not having that system, such a waste of the gps time having to take so many calls from patients. On the repeat system, gp has to sign the scripts before the patient picks them up, so surely if they think there is a problem they attach a note to the script and take if from there. the only time I had a problem with repeats was when I was trying to order them all at once to save going more than once a month, but another gp signed and noticed that it was quite a bit under the month since I had received one of the meds so put a note on my script. When I got home I found a couple of packets that I had mislaid in a cupboard

So relieved to hear that you feel better about the situation now. You have the meds for a month and I am sure it will all work out and you get the meds that suit you in future.

It must have come as a shock to you when you called in and were spoken to in that fashion by a gp. Just totally not the reaction you were expecting. No wonder you could not strike back and say your piece.

Enjoy the rest of your day. We are all behind you. Now that you are ok I shall go and bake a cake. :D

Hi, I know that medical opinions change over the years and studies show that things that used to be thought of as good are now a big NO NO, but, when dealing with their patients, some docs seem to automattically assume that if the patient is taking something they disaprove of, its the patients fault. Don't they ever think back to how it began. Did you demand to be put on a certain drug? No, of course not, the doctor gave them to you to help you. A GP who is standing in for your doctor should follow that doctors treatment, unless the situation changes. Even if he has other ideas, he should discuss this with your GP when he returns, not bully you and give you worries. Well, thats my opinion, anyway. I'm sorry to go on" I'm sure you'll be fine when your doctor comes back.
    Love Sue

    Hi Sandra
Ooh I am begining to think not only that we live in the same county, but the same doctor, mine has just retired and he was brilliant and such a caring doc. I have seen some useless so called locum doctors in the past few months, even my consultant was horrible to me. I really dont know how some of them keep their jobs (thats probably why they are locums, cant get a proper job)

    Hi Sandra
I am a great believer in writing a letter of complaint when it is justified, which it is in your case. The Dr has not seen you or examined you so how can she accuse you of being addicted. At the very least she if she had reservations she should have called you in and examined you. I would certainly want my own Dr to know what has happened as soon as they were back from holiday.

    Hi Sandra
I hope you hubby is home soon!
Glad you have enough meds till Dr is back.
As far as taking it further I reckon you have a case for complaint, but I usually write it all down now , but do NOTHING for a while. Then I complain later on if I still feel incensed. I feel less emotionally involved then and more able to deal with it.
In your position at the moment I would probably bawl my eyes out!!
    You take care
