Hi Guys,

Well I am at crisis point already and only 8 weeks preggers! My Rhuemy has said its fine to stay on my 5mg of pred throughout the pregnancy but this isn't enough. I've had such a bad flare up over the past 3 days that I could not sit with my hip pain, let alone sleep or walk! My poor hubby had to carry me around and help me turn in bed!

I emailed my rhuemy who said it was fine att his stage to start back on diclofenac 75mg once a day until 3rd trimester.

I just wondered if anyone has any experience with these meds during preg. I am finding so much conflicting information that it scares me! Most websites are saying pred in early pregnancy has lots of risks which has scared me to tears!

I am just so worried but surely my rhuemy knows what he's doing?!?! The pred is a very low dose and so is the diclofenac.

In my opinion I obviously dont want to do anything to harm this baby that we have wanted for the past 5 years but on the other hand surely me being in so much pain & stress will cause the baby stress itself? I'm just so confused!
Heeeeeeelp!

    HI

So sorry to hear that you are having a tough time.

I can't give you any direct advice about specific meds, as I have not been in your situation or taken the same meds.

I can tell you that when we were thinking of going down the IVF route we had lots of discussions with our GP, my Gynaecologist and the rheumatologist about which if any drugs were safe to take in pregnancy.

If you are at all concerned about the Pred. then I would urge you to talk this over with either your GP or gynaecologist. Your GP could, if they don't know enough to help you, ask a specialist unit about safety of meds in pregnancy. My GP did this asking about sulphasalazine, and they faxed her all sorts of info which I was able to give to my gynae prof when I saw him.

I wish you well with yoru pregnancy - it is great news. Try not to worry too much, but also dont be made to feel that you are worrying over nothing - you have every right to ask pertinent questions and have the info to make an informed choice.

    best of luck!

    hi

am afraid am not much help with regard to meds ( as i wasn't on meds at the time of my second pregnancy) however i had a flare up at 6 weeks pregnant so i know how bad you are feeling and bad doesn't even come close do it. i struggled with no drugs!! BUT light at the end of your tunnel by 4 or 5 months pregnant i felt alot better and the later stage of pregnancy i felt very good! hang on in there cos it's worth all the pain and tears, i just sat on the sofa and cried day after day and i had a little boy of 3 to look after as well. i did have very dark days stuff that i won't even tell my hubby so if you need someone to chat about it with PM me by all means.
the other thing is my thyroid stopped working which was one of the reasons i felt sooo bad please get your levels checked. it's common in pregnancy for the thyroid to play up.
as for baby i have a healthy little girl so pain and stress won't effect your baby. i had plenty of both too!

I had my 1st baby boy last year (i can't believe he will be 1 in a few weeks) and we where trying to get pregnant for a year before i concived. During that time i asked my RA Dr what to expect during the pregnncy and what drugs i could use and i was told very bluntly 'your not the 1st person with Ra to try to get pregnant'. This made me feel horrible so was rather shocked when i finially got pregnant and no-one could give me an answer. Everyone had the own opinion, my gp would say one thing my RA Dr would say something else and then the midwife would go and contradict them both. I was put on Pred early on in the pregancy and due to this i had about 5 scans rather than the normal 2 so they could keep an eye on the babies growth.

The 1st trimster was horrible though, was in alot of pain and had horrible morning sickness, but by around week 13-15 it all stopped and i had a pretty normal pregnancy.

I won't lie its a horrible position to be in, so much so, after a year i'm still debating with myself about the pro's and con's of a 2nd due to the lack of support i had with my son. But all said and done he was worth every min!

Good luck with the pregnancy! x

    Hi Josie,

I think you need to talk to your GP or Rheumy face to face for reassurce more than anything. Emails are fine but for something as important as the little life inside you, you really need peace of mind.

I sincerely hope your flare-up settles down soon and I suggest you get plenty of rest a)'cos you're pregnant and b) because your body's coping with the pain too. Be kind to yourself.

Seek help and advice from a medical person.

    Best wishes.
