Just me and dodgy knee saying Hi!

Hi there, I wanted to say Hi and to say what a friendly and informative place this seems to be.

I'm a 40 year old female, used to being VERY active (I'm a fitness instructor) but who has had knee problems for several months that have got worse and worse. A recent MRI has shown early OA changes under the patella (that would explain the sound effects I create then on extending my leg!) and I've also got an area of osteochondritis dissecans on my medial femoral condyle - this is quite rare apparently so at least I have some novelty value...

Anyway, I'm quite gutted at the moment. The pain and swelling come and go but I'm never pain free at the moment. A period of Naproxen hasn't helped and I'm now taking Tramadol to keep the pain a bit more controlled. My usual fitness and training activities have almost stopped and I'm seeing a knee specialist this weekend so I'm a bit worried. I'm trying to stay positive but it is all a bit of a shock and a big change from the mad sessions of exercise I used to do all week. I can't even go downstairs properly at the moment.

Do people on here advocate a steroid injection to help with early stage OA symptoms? I know they won't cure anything but can they settle things down? This seems a big flare up after a summer of very strenuous activity. The OCD is a different matter and I have no idea what the doctor might want to do with that!

Thanks for any help you can offer and thanks for reading,

Lottie 8)

Hiya Lottie and welcome :D !

I have RA, not OA..not yet, anyway....but am sure there will be other OAers along to say 'hi' soon!

That's a shame you've had to stop the classes for a while. Hopefully once you're on the proper meds, you'll be back bossing your ladies again!

I used to love Body Pump but now even pilates is too challenging, but.....one day!

    Hello Lottie

Hi and and a big welcome from me.

I cannot say about knees but you will meet plenty of people on here.

If you go to Living With Arthritis Forum, you can ask that question and people will answer about their arthritis in their knees.

I have Steroid injections for my hands fingers and it helps, it gives a bit of relief from it.

    Hi Lottie

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry that you are having such a humungus flare at the moment. I have had trouble with my knees but in 08 had a TKR and am having the other one done in January.

Look forward to seeing your name on the other zones. We all try to help and offer sympathy to each other on here.

Another member on the forum is a physical trainer and is suffering big time at the moment.

Steroid injections have helped me for my shoulder, hands and hopefully after tomorrow, my sciatica. Unfortunately this is not a permanent solution though but does give one a break. :)

    Look after yourself,

    Luv

    Hi Lottie

A big welcome from me. Yes I can imagine you are shocked and frustrated considering your previous active life. Do post on the other forums I am sure you will get advise and support from those who can best give it. At least here you don't have to suffer in silence and people will help if they can.
    Take care

Yes, welcome from me, too. I have the knee problem too, with me it's both

I find Chit-Chat takes my mind off the problems quite often; join us there any time for help and advice too, as well as the LWA forum.

    See you around!
