Arthritis of the cricoarytenoid joint

I was reading something interesting, that some people with RA have problems with their cricoarytenoid joint. Is this a common feature? I keep having problems with my throat; it feels swollen, blocked and sore. I've had periods of losing my voice but everytime, I've been to the dr, they say it's viral and that it will pass. It does but I can't remember the last time my throat wasn't sore. I've been tested lots of time for glandular fever but it's always been negative. Also, I quite often find myself feeling like I'm choking on foods and even liquids. I chew properly and eat slowly, could it be connected? Is there any info I could read on this subject? Also, if a dr looked down my throat, would they be able to see anything because whenever they look, they say "it's a bit red but it's not infected"?

We don’t have any information on this but I have asked our information department to look into this for you to see if there is any appropriate information that we can give you. Is it worth mentioning to the rheumy rather than GP?

You know I choke too!!! On anything - even inhale spit I reckon

If you find out anything I would be interested. One of the forum members has definitely had this I think - he did a lot of public speaking as i remember and this was really bad for him.

I will mention it next time I see my rheumy. I've only ever seen my GP about it because I've never connected the two. All I've known is that my throat has been causing me issues. Thank you for the reply.

Hello Princedd I'm Colin and its nice to meet you. Frogmorton ( TONI ) asked me to look you up as i'm not on the site to much these days. Sorry to hear your having problems. I have Ra and it did get into my throat still effects me now but getting used to having it. Started off painful when swallowing then got worse, became difficult to swallo and i kept loosing my voice. When my voice hasent gone i dont sound like me. constant pain in the muscles in my throat and at times the voicebox swells a bit. but from time to time i get some relief from it just like the rest of my body There is loads of info on the net look up RA and the voicebox
You need to be refered to the ENT specialist. On my first appointment he looked at my voice box with a camera inserted through the nose and down the back of the throat. Its ok doesent hurt just a little uncomfortable but you get to see your throat on TV lol. Sounds awful but you get a diagnosis the same day so its worth it. Some Meds can also cause throat problems You really do need to talk to your Rheumy or the rheumy nurse. Take Care

Ell that sounds so familiar.... I had a swollen epiglottis area and my voice went to pot as well as not being able to swallow..... My useless doctors wouldn't give me a referral (apparently I had had my quota :shock: ) and after 6 months it really did make me worried (I smoke you see

) and I saw a locum who did send me to ENT. By the time the appointment came through (5 months later) it had all but gone and they just said a whole string of might have beens..... They didn't know I had pa then cus I hadn't mentioned it to anyone and well since then I lose my voice from time to time, go croaky(but I have had a cold for so long I have named it!) and well can't sing too well.......I also have trouble shouting for (and at

) the employers and a low grade sore throat...... Reading this if and when it does it again well i will ask to see the Rumo maybe? Cris x

Oh Princess it is exactly what I was doing. Couldn't swallow, the external neck went red and you know what suddenly I an so angry with the useless doctors! What I promise you is if mine eased off with not treatment them (subject to it being the same thing) yours should as well, and with treatment quicker. I also had this 4 years ago and except some uncomforted here and there and the low grade sore throat its not too bad..... I don't know what mine is but well it is similar. could you keep me posted please and well thanks for bringing it up. Cris who has to use self diagnosis too much
