ergonomic knives - I've finally got some!!!

Been to see OT again today and had a try at stuff in the kitchen.

I may be getting a perching stool, and I have been and bought a veg brush and veg peeler that fit over a finger and need little hand/finger pressure, as the OT could suggest a big supermarket that stocked them.

When I tried the ergonomic knife she had it was great - only she doesn't know where to get them other than in specialist mobility catalogues and I really would like to handle them before I commit to buying a particular one.

Has anyone got such knives (they have handles that are roughly at right angles to the blade) and any ideas where they are sold?

thanks

I have a knife like you described and they are easy to use (Prefer me Chinese cleaver though), got mine in a local mobility shop.

HI Del - thanks for the reply - how are you doing right now? hope you are feeling better?

do you mind if I ask what kind of knife it is?
I tried a bread knife, but would like one also that can be used for chopping veg - something I do a lot of

I have found an internet site that stocks some, not too expensive, so will keep looking around and see if I can find anyone who can let me try one out.

    thanks Del.

    Hi Wonky,
I have bought things in the past from both my local disability shop and also via boots the chemist. With both they have sometimes had to order things in - they don't seem to mind though if they are not quite right for you - they just put the items on the shelf....

At school we often use the Nottingham rehab catalogue - especially when ordering specialist cups, cutlery etc

All these things are madly expensive - don't forget to see if you can get them VAT free.

Fancy OT showing you something brill and then not knowing where you can get one!! Reminds me of school when they ask us all to look at what a rep has brought in and then say that of course there is no money in the budget to spend at this time!!

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

hi Wonky, I've got an ergonomic knife the ot bought me. It is great but large, I did find some smaller ones on an internet trawl. It is very good for cutting bread etc, but a bit large for preparing veg.

Just had a look at my knife and it's made by Peta

thanks Del - they look like what I want. :D

Been doing my DIY today - bought a cheap plastic chopping board, some steel panel pins and voila, with a bit of brute force, the odd choice word  and the swift application of a hammer  I now have a board that will hold the veg for me whilst I chop it ...... I promise that only one poor potato was sacrificed in the making of said board :lol::lol::lol:

    Hi Wonkylegs -

    I love homemade inventions!!

I'm always designing things for the children at school, for my (foster) son etc I also have adaptions at home for me - my living room door is on a pulley so that I can pull the door closed without getting up - whenever my beautiful cat flings the door open to make a dramatic entrance. I also had a pulley over my stairs when I had my last hip done so that I could take things up and downstairs - whilst on no-weight bearing restrictions. A bit eccentric but very practical!

Maybe you can patent your vegetable holder?!

Just thought I'd update this to let you know that I received my parcel of knives on Saturday morning and I am thrilled.

on Saturday evening we had a stir fry and I chopped and chopped and was so thrilled that after all the food prep I still had wrists and hands that were useful :D:D

if anyone has wrist and hand problems I would definitely suggest giving them a try.

only downside is how to keep them safe in the kitchen, as they won't fit in my knife block and the magnetic holder is too big for the space left on my kitchen wall :(

Hugs from a happy WOnky (about food preparation anyway  )
