Any alternative to diclofenac

Hi There,
I have been taking diclofenac at a low dose plus omeprazole for a few weeks. I take them as prescribed, omep on empty stomach and dic with food. I have been getting ever increasing stomach symptoms and yesterday it was so bad I was sick. The sad thing is they really work for the arthritis but today I stopped them as I could not take the stomach ache and nausea any longer.
I have phoned my Gp for a telephone app to see if there is an alternative which does not have this effect (Ibuprofen also makes me nauseaus)
I have felt rotten today, really achey and tired . It is 2 weeks until I see an ortho and considered waiting till then to try to change meds.
Do the newer co2 inhibitors ie celebrex also affect the stomach?
Thanks in advance!! Fay

    Hi Fay,

Butting in here but sorry your having trouble. I googled the co2's a while back as the diclo's were a problem for a bit and can't remember what it said but I know I was thinking of them being a good alternative. I wasn't changed in the end but the inhibitor was as the rumo said the omeprazole just wasn't strong enough.... Hey patches I looked at as well so there are some alternatives out there and Val on the helplines told me about 3 tablets when I asked. One began with an A but that's as much as my addled brain can manage I am afraid  you take care and the helpline folk will be able to help you with names. Cris x

Really glad of any advice anyone can give and I always think that those that have the problem themselves usually have lots of good ideas !
Sorry your brain is addled but I expect that you also have a lot of pain and it does tend to affect your thinking .
I use patches for pain and they are WONDERFUL for my creaky neck , they dont tend to work for the inflammation though. Maybe it is like you say and the inhibitor needs changing . ATB Fay

    Hi Fay

I was on diclo for a couple of years and all was good but then the stomach pains/discomfort started. The gp prescribed Arcoxia instead. I find this suits me and have been on it quite a while. I have recently halved the daily dosage to one pill and that is ok for me still with keeping the inflammation at bay.

You could ask your gp to see what he thinks.

    Hi Fay,

I think getting the tablets right and the side effects balanced take a bit of time...... They will get there though. I do well on diclo's but have been on em a very long time so for me the omprozole wasn't good enough and my rumo tends to use lansoprazole and instead of the omp's 20 these are 30 so it might be that simple for you as well. I do think though if you can find an alternative that is a good it would help your digestion to change.

Elna knew the name bless her and now I think she had told earlier in the day yesterday  My memory is sponsored by pain and pain relief tablets :lol: You take care and let us now what they decide to give you please. Cris x

    Hi Cheshirefay

I think Elna and Skezier (Thank you ladies!) have just about covered it so I think the next thing to do would be to talk to your doctor and see what they prescribe.

    Best wishes

Hi hope you get sorted. I swear by arcoxia and recently the GP added omprazole as I have been on it years.

My sister didn't get on at all well on diclophenic (sp?)

S did not do well on omprazole (takes it for acid reflux) does much better on lansoprazole.

I'm sure you'll find the right combination ... everyone is different, just a shame you have to wait 2 weeks. If it gets unbearable - make an emergency appointment instead.

PS you said you didn't get on well with iboprufen - were you on the omprazole then? If not you might be ok taking both (ie omprazole and iboprufen) until your appointment.
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi All,
Doc changed my tabs to naproxin and I am taking my sons lanzoprazole instead of my omeprazole!!
This combination seems to be much better , still hobbling a bit though :? Only a few days till my app with ortho , have made a few notes to take along and really would like him to investigate my hips. Do you think I should just come out with it " Please would you xray my hips" I know some Consultants don`t like you to tell them what to do but I feel I have been passed from pillar to post for so long . I have been having problems with my joints since my early twenties and I am now in my fifties!!
Thanks for all the replies and ideas
    Fay xx

    Hi Fay,

It's not so unusual that people ask the specialist 'whether it's time for some up to date x-rays?' If they don't like the idea you can follow up with an additional question... like when was an x-ray done?

Sometimes having someone with you at the appointment is useful - a good friend, or member of the family to take notes (generally people take someone who is good with doctors/ hospitals).

These self-management ideas you can explore more fully on courses like challenging arthritis - see in your area on our website.

    Hope that helps
