HI

I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia last year and the consultant put me on pred 10mg, plus other drugs, anyway went to see him yesterday and was told my crp and esr are still high so carry on taking the same dose of steroids....today i asked for a repeat prescription for pred from my doctor, who said she doesnt agree with the consultant, that i should be taking this for another 6 mths and will only give me 4 weeks supply....what do i do as i have been told by the consultant NOT to stop taking the pred.......

    Hi angell

I am very surprised that a gp is over riding what a consultant has prescribed for you. Like Toni says, I would call your consultants secretary and ask what you should do or what he will do for you, to get it sorted with your gp.

Hi Angel - like the others say, I would have thought that the consultant knows what he is talking about - after all, he is the specialist. Also, you can't just stop the steroids from 10mg anyway, you would have to have a proper regime for cutting down slowly so the GP would need to continue to prescrible them for you during that time. I guess that the GP didn't volunteer to phone the consultant to query the decision? I agree with other peeps that your best bet would be to phone the consultant on Monday and ask him to speak to your GP.

Hope you do get it sorted.

    Hi angell :D

Guess you'll be phoning rheummy on Monday....seems the only way to sort this out!

I had the same problem with my 'new' GP who refused to prescribe co-dydramol along with my other meds as he said they were dangerous in combination and I could also overdose... despite him knowing (me telling him) that rheummy and ortho consultants had conferred and agreed on my combination of drugs and I had managed not to do myself any harm for three years!.

I phoned rheummy and he 'clarified' the situation in a letter to the GP.

good luck and let us know what happens please.

    Hi Angel,
Contact your specialist and tell him/her what has happened , something similar happened to me a few years ago , a young new gp thought I was on too many meds and interferred with them , my specialist wrote to him and told him , Do not interfere with my treatment , He was the specialist NOT the gp, because of the interference I was quite ill for months and even my gp apologised in the end BECAUSE my treatment regime masked my symptoms and the true extent of my RA and I was the one that suffered.
You will learn to stand up for yourself against the drs , don't forget its your body.
