    Hi Daylily

I think if it was me in this situation I would listen to the pain clinic. They are dealing with people suffering with pain all the time so I would say they are the best people to be giving you advice. Most people on here praise the pain clinics and I have had extremely good service from them too. They sorted my sciatica with some injections after I had suffered for nearly a year. It is 8 months since I had the injections and all is well. I cannot thank them enough.

I had a very swollen left knee for years and believed the docs when they said it would go away. Go back, ask them to look again and check for fluid in the joint. They can do this by touch, if they are good enough. If fluid is present, ask to have it aspirated. It's not a pleasant procedure, believe me, but it does reduce the pain and swelling. You may have to have it done my a rheumatologist, I don't know. I ended up having surgery, the same op twice, all because I wasn't forceful enough. You have to be assertive here: don't make the same mistake as me. DD

    Hi daylily :D

with differing opinions...no wonder you're confused.

if it were me and the symptoms persist, I'd be back asking my doc to have it x rayed to see if there is any obvious sign of arther or be referred to a specialist for further investigation.

you have pain and swelling and sleepless nights because of it... so are justified in asking for a definitive diagnosis if possible and treatment/ pain relief as a must.

I do hope it eases up daylily. meantime try putting a pillow under your knee when you're in bed or stretched out on the settee...it helps take the pressure off the joint.

    HI Daylily - how ridiculous.

I agree with Iris, go back to your GP and ask for it to be x-rayed/referral to an ortho consultant.

Do the pain clinic and GP not liaise/communicate?

How could the second GP not say anything??!! How can he be earning a wage by just sitting there, mute?!

Have you tried wedging a pillow between your legs if sleeping on your side ie (to support the upper leg so it rests all in a line and sloping down to the ankle or a pillow under your knees if sleeping on your back?

What did the pain clinic recommend?

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Dear Daylily

Thank you for your posting. As the others that have responded to your posting have said, I know it can feel difficult to go and see your GP again after the previous reaction but it is very important that you get a definitive diagnosis of your condition so that it can then be managed accordingly. Is there anyone that you can take with you to give you a bit of moral support? If you follow the linkhttp://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/PublicationsandResources this will lead you to our information on managing arthritis. The booklets ‘Understanding Arthritis’ and ‘Living with osteoarthritis’ will give you lots of information about the condition and how it can be managed that should be helpful. Also you are more than welcome to call us on the helpline (0808 800 4050, Mon-Fri, 10am – 4pm) to talk things through with the helpline team here.

    I hope this is helpful.
    Best Wishes
    Dawn

That's good advice from Dawn about taking someone with you. I know when I was going to get my Fibromyalgia diagnosed I took my husband with me. One so that the doctor would have to justify it to two people instead of one, two so that another person also took in the information in case I forgot anything and three, that they are there to also help support your case.

Well worth it to get a proper diagnosis. You can't treat what you don't know about, and if it is OA, then you will probably want some guidance on how to manage it. The help booklets on here are really good for that.

    Take care and gentle hugs
    Ange..xx

hi,dreamdaisy, trisher, dorcas, speedalong, angie1973 and the helpline team. Just got back from 2 days camping.
i will try the pillows between knees (take me back to pre-hip re-surface days).
dreamdaisy, the pain clinic said it's not fluid just swollen,as you know doc said nothing
dorcas and speedalong will ask doc for x-ray when i find new doctor to register with-having trouble finding one cos we're so far from anywhere- i've sorted the pillows out.
    trisher thanks for hugs
angie1973, I can't take hubby as he's disabled from a stroke and with his memory problems he wouldn't remember anyway.
I'm not going to put up with any more rubbish,
hopefully get a new doc shortly. Pain clinic just said go back docs
I'll see what happens this week
    all for now.xx

So what is it full of then? Air? That seems daft to me. Inflammation causes swelling, and joint inflammation hints at fluid to me, but then I'm no doc - I just get fat knees, or used to, now I get fat fingers and toes. I hope you can get to the bottom of this - something isn't adding up. In my neck of the woods pain clinics (a thing of the past now) were used to give information about the causes of pain, the treatment for pain and how to cope with pain. I hope you find some answers soon. DD
