The Concept of Time

Hi

Do you find the concept of time difficult to understand :?: It baffles me.

Sometimes it seems as though the years pass by so quickly, and you wonder where all that time went. In my mind, I can travel back in time to being a child, and some memories are so vivid that it is as though it was only yesterday. On the other hand, time can pass so slowly when you are waiting for something to happen.

Here are some thoughts about time;

Time waits for no man, but occasionally it stands still

Time heals all wounds but is also the great destroyer

We don't know where the time goes, but there's all the time in the world

Time crawls, marches and flies; we make time, save time and kill it.

Lost time is never found again

Time goes, you say? Ah no! Alas, Time stays, we go. (The Paradox of Time)

Oh well, "Tempus fugit'' so it's time for bed.

Joan

Continuum. We impose the events. The idea of 'time' is an artificial construct, at least in the way we define and measure it. There is a natural rhythm to the world, in terms of daylight and darkness, but we ignore it. DD

OOHH, Mell, have you gone into one of those micro wormholes or something? You've posted the same thing twice :!:

Re. time slowing down, the faster you go, have you ever experienced time seeming to go into slow motion?

I was in a bad car accident some years ago, and I could see that a colllision was unavoidable. Instinctively, I went into the brace position as on an aircraft, and then everything seemed to go into slow motion as I waited for the crash to happen. As the car spun round, and I felt the impact of the crash, it seemed to take forever before it eventually came to a stop. In fact, it all happened in a matter of minutes. Strange, isn't it :?:

    Hi CB
In a nutshell, I don't think I could ever fully understand. Stephen Hawking is very clever, but even he can't explain time with any certainty.

Thanks, Joan. Thankfully, I wasn't badly hurt, but I suffered flash-backs of the accident for a long time afterwards. It was very frightening.

Think about the here and now and the future will take care of itself.

Everything else is theory, including Black Holes, as no one has ever seen one. They have seen things that MAY be a Black Hole, but are not yet really sure.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, as they say.

I wonder to what extent we make our own future by our past and present actions :?: Or is everything pre-ordained for us :?: I don't know.

Think about the here and now and the future will take care of itself.

    Sound advice, Joseph :!: :D

Nothing is pre-ordained, or planned. Lives hit each other in random ways, based on decisions made in isolation. DD

Yes, I have felt that something was to be, but only AFTER a totally random event. I married a man in an October one year, then three months later met another man, the current Mr DD (isn't he honoured?! :D ). Meeting the current had nothing to do with the marriage, everything to do with answering a job advert. The people who placed the advert had no idea how they would change my life. Neither did I. It was sheer chance that Mr DD was working in the same building as me. Random. Totally. Good result tho! DD

Sorry, DD, I confused that by deleting my previous post just as you were replying.

You sound so certain that nothing is pre-ordained, but I'm not so sure. How do you know that apparently random events weren't all meant to be?

As you say, good result anyway, whether random or pre-ordained :!: :D

How could they all be planned? If we are talking about people, it would indicate that we are ALL living our lives to a pre-ordained pattern, but how? Mr DD and I were born 364 days apart - who planned that? And is it relevant? I don't think it is. What was the Star Trek thing about logic? It just cannot be logical. (Says she, middle aged and blonde to boot!) I could be run over by a bus tomorrow: is that planned? (Having said that, Rob could be behind the wheel, in his waders and earring!) DD

Right, I have been thinking about this - joanlawson you certainly set some hares running in my brain! What makes you think that it is all pre-ordained? DD

PS Ichabod, we were both right - today turned up, as expected!
