Fingers bent upwards at DIP joint

Hi,

My fingers are bending noticeably upwards at the finger tip, especially the ring finger on both hands. Is this a sign of any types of arthritis? I've had blood tests and there is not sign of R.Factor or inflammation.

Thanks

    Hello there

I have that too, it's called swan neck. I think!

Have you had any tests etc and had any diagnosis?

I have always got high inflammation markers so not sure if it can be present without any inflammation.

I'm sure someone will be able to answer your question soon enough

    Hello SGK,

Welcome to Chat to Helplines. I'm sorry for the delay answering you, but we have been short staffed. I wonder whether you know any background that might help us to signpost you? For example do you have a diagnosis of arthritis and what kind is it? Also if you are being treated for arthritis, how long has that been for? For example if you are under a rheumatologist already then you'd probably need to get in touch with them.

If you don't have an arthritis diagnosis, then you will need to talk to your GP and see where they can refer you.

If you'd like to talk about your arthritis, you'd be most welcome to ring us on our freephone (0808 800 4050 10-4 mon-fri)

    I hope that's helpful

    Guy,

    Thanks for the response.

Basically, I've had mild pain in my fingers and toes, aswell as my heel for around 6 months - heel pain really only first thing in the morning. Major joints seem fine. As I say, my fingers, over the past couple of months, have bent noticeably upwards, away from the palms.

Blood tests showed no sign of inflammation, so the dr considered I may have osteo, but its gone no further.

Was just wondering if it should be something I should be worried about and that needs to be taken further.

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Steve :D

I have 'swan neck deformity' in three of my fingers as a result of having Psoriatic Arthritis; the inflammation affected the middle (PIP) joints and ligaments. (causing hyper-extension of the PIP joints which ultimately leads to the deformity).

Swan neck deformity can also be caused by injury to the hand.

If you are concerned about your fingers then it might be advisable to speak to your doctor again about it..and perhaps ask to be referred to a hand specialist. :?:

    good luck with this Steve.
