I worked very successfully for 15yrs as a Registered Childminder, not an easy job to do with 'arfur' though and I had to give up, I still hope to resurrect it if my PA settles down...maybe next year.
Wish you luck in your search

    HI Rachel,

I don't work from home, but know others who do.

What are your skills/interests/previous work experience?

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

I'm looking at working from home, but it seems quite difficult at the moment to find something wortwhile..
I tried avon but someone else does it by me so would have to go further afield.. am unable to do this due to my walking and don't drive..
If you come up with anything let me know..

    Hi Rachel

I looked at the possibility of freelance proof reading or copy editing which you can do from home. Trouble is the training on a correspondence courses is quite expensive, but if it interests it can pay well. It might be worth a google if you are interested.
    best wishes

Hi Chris, always wondered about this. Those adverts for the courses always grab your attention don't they? Nothing like someone using a wrong spelling to get you to notice! How do you know it pays well? Do you know someone who makes a decent living from it? How many hours do they put in? How do they get hold of work? (Just curious ...)

Hi Speedy no I have no personal knowledge sorry. The course I looked at years ago was from one of those adverts but can't recall which. It was an expensive investment but I think they guaranteed you some contacts to start with if I remember correctly. You do need to be pretty self disciplined and set your own hours and be able to concentrate on every full stop. I think it helped if you could specialise in something like a medical or science background rather than just reading lovely new novels. I guess most of it is done on downloads now rather than printed. Be warned I proof read my nieces medical dissertations and they can be sooooo boring!!

I like to think I can spot most errors, but even after 20 years in libraries, I wasn't sure my grammar was up to it. Those pesky apostrophe rules and split infinitives are the very devil! If you can put up with the tedium, work to deadlines and make a reputation for yourself the hourly rate was pretty good back then but I guess the work is limited these days. When I was enquiring, and this was years ago; some publishers and even local newspapers used to take on freelance people but who knows what happens now with budget cuts.

If I haven't put you or anyone else off yet, give it a go but be prepared to put the work in to build up regular clients and yes the rewards would be worth it.
    best wishes
    Chris

I have been a registered childminder which was ideal as i was at home with my own kids however i have had to give up due to arthritis, just not suitable at all. I have been wondering about retraining in book keeping and starting up doing other childminders accounts. Im just not sure how much this would pay as most childminders do their own to keep costs down. Im thinking i might look into it though. At this point everything gets very carefully considered. Were really missing my income and not relying to getting any benefit so i need to come up with something fast. Im not good with adults face to face, not a people person so i would be useless at avon or similar!

Hi, I'm a Care Assisstant with 10 years of experience in paid work and 2 years looking after my Mother in law at our home!!!
I really enjoy it but cant' do the physical work involved as it can be very hard and the situations involoving heavy work can come unexpectedly. I have thought of doing a sort of Self employed 'baby-sitting' type service for people at home who just need someone to do basic jobs, but my husband is not keen as some of the worst experiences I had were when I worked in the community and no back up. Love Sue
