I suffer with Osteo-arthritis in both knees, and also muscle wastage in one leg. Could you please let me have your advice as to the effectiveness of using EMS - ELECTRONIC MUSCLE STIMULATION machines in treating the weakened muscle. Thank you Ian Green

Hi Ian
Thank you for your posting.
We do not have specific information on Electronic Muscle Stimulation machines, though they work by stimulating the muscles by way of electric impulses. Timers on the EMS machine contract and relax the muscles, allowing you to tone or work muscles. They need to be used in conjunction with an exercise programme to strengthen your muscles. It is best to speak to a physiotherapist regarding their usefulness and to get a muscle strengthening programme. You can get a referral to a physiotherapist from your doctor.
For information on 'exercise and arthritis' see our booklet at http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/PublicationsandResources/Listedbytype/Booklets and on 'osteoarthritis of the knee' at http://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/arthritis_information/arthritis_types_and_symptoms/osteoarthritis_of_the_knee.aspx.
I hope this helps.
Please ring our helplines if you would like to have a chat, or need more information.
I have sent the same reply to your e-mail.
