RA and bursitis

I have had RA for 10years now and it is successfully controlled by taking hydroxychloroquine and methotrexate. I have recently been diagnosed as having bursitis in my hip which is nothing short of agony. MY GP has prescribed diclofenac and rest as the only way to get over it. I wondered if there is a link between the RA and the bursitis - I haven't injured myself but am used to walking the dog twice a day and doing a couple of moderate gym sessions a week. Giving up this level of activity is misery for me.

In short - are the two conditions linked in any way and is there anything else I can do to alleviate the symptoms. I am also feeling 'wiped out' with the pain etc.

Thank you

Hi, I have had bursitis in hip and shoulder. Currently sure it has come back in both shoulders. I was given steroid injections into the joint by my consultant. It worked for a good while. I have inflammatory arthritis.

    Dear Maisie,

Thank you for your post to Helplines. One of things people generally do if they get a problem with an inflamed joint is to speak to their rheumatology specialist nurse. It may be that they will want to check you over (check recent blood results etc) and talk to the specialist if their is a chance your meds need adjusting.

Some studies have found that taking high dose (average 3gms per day) omega 3 supplements can be helpful.

    I hope that is helpful
