Hi Everyone,
In a few weeks, I have to have 2 back teeth (one at each side) removed. I broke them years ago, but have now decided that they need to come out as they are starting to decay.
My main problem (apart from total fear) is that my mouth will only open a couple of centimetres at the most. I have been passed to a dentist that specialises in awkward patients, as my own Dentist confessed that 'his tool was too big to fit in my mouth'!
I'm worried about what will happen during the treatment
Has anyone else had this problem? I really need someone to allay my fears.
Here's hoping!! Sandra x

Oooer, Sanmar  I'm glad I have a lady dentist. I do have problems opening my jaw for her but luckily have never had to have back teeth out since my jaw got so bad.

I'd be glad to have a specialist but would want to ensure he knows exactly what he's up against before he starts. Will you have a local or a general? I know general anaesthetic can be used in some dental situations as I was once in a ward with a woman who was having it but she didn't have arthritis. Please let's know how you get on.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

    Hi!,
I'll be having a local, I can never have a general because my neck is fused too. I gotta admit, I'm terrified!!

Hi Toni, I'm not having the treatment til July, they cant give me anything to relax me at the Clinic I'm going to, I'd have to go into hospital for that - and I wont. :(
I am absolutely petrified, but my dentist is very caring and understanding (good looking too) and I'm hoping that my fears are unfounded.
I'll let you know how it goes, but at the moment, I'm trying not to think about it.
I hope you're keeping well, love,

Hi! I had my treatment in July, and, although i took a long time to heal (due to my Methotrexate I suspect) I am very happy with the treatment I received. Having RA since the age of 1 year, pain is not an issue - I can cope with it. My main problem was my fear of Dentists due to the (terrifying) treatment I endured as a child! :(
For the first extraction, I took Diazipam (from my GP)- for the 2nd, I didn't feel the need to take any. Yes, my mouth doesn't open very far, but the Dentist was amazing and is happy to keep me on his list if it helps me - Thank Goodness!! :D

This is a spammer, Sanmar. You can tell by the blue link. No point in wasting your time being nice to them. They only want your money  I've reported it.

    Hi LouLou,
I think the best thing I did, was to find a Dentist that was sympathetic and understanding -(Though the first time I saw him, I wouldn't even sit in his chair!)
When the appointment was due, my GP prescribed some sedatives, and the rest was plain old determination that I HAD to get it done. I had many sleepless nights and panic attacks galore, but to be honest, it wasn't half as bad as I'd feared. Yes, it was painful afterwards, but I am so proud of myself now - I've done something that I thought was impossible!!
Get in touch with your local dental hospital and explain your situation, they will have a dentist that deals with disabled people, these dentists deal with people that are far more disabled than us.
Go for it Lou - I promise you'll be glad you did! .......and keep in touch, I'll help you as much as I can. - Sandra xxx
