Hello

I have recently been told that I may have Osteoarthritis in both knees :-( I am struggling with pain after sleeping because of my mattress

Can anyone recommend a good mattress that won't cause pain after a good nights sleep?

Many thanks
Denise

Hi, I'm a forum user, not a member of the helpline team. Matresses are a very personal thing and what helps one person is not good for another. I have OA in both knees and ankles and I find sleeping with a pillow either between or under my legs helps to ease the pressure on the joints. There are various threads about mattresses and pillows on the LWA board of the forum, you'll find opinions a-plenty! DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi Denise

    Thanks for your posting.

I’m sorry to hear about the pain that you are experiencing in your knees and with your struggle sleeping.

For information on a good mattress you could contact the Disabled Living Foundation (http://www.dlf.org.uk/), DIAL UK (http://www.scope.org.uk/dial) or speak to a physiotherapist (via a referral from your doctor).

For information on Osteoarthritis in the knees see http://www.arthritisresearchuk.org/arthritis-information/conditions/osteoarthritis-of-the-knee.aspx.

You are welcome to ring us on 0808 800 4050 if you would like to have a chat, or need more information.

    Regards

Denise, would an adjustable bed help at all? This would probably be a more expensive option in comparison to buying a new mattress but maybe the benefits would be greater. Adjusting the bed to a setting where your knees are in a comfortable position may help tremendously. I'd recommend reading opinions of others with Osteoarthritis first though as I'm not experienced in this area, nor am I a health professional.

Last time I bought a mattress (around 10 months ago) I used easysnoozing.com to find some of the better mattresses. They might have some information about mattresses suitable for your Osteoarthritis too if you take a look around.

Hope this helps and I hope you manage to find a mattress that helps with your knees.
