Hi I have Osteoarthritis in big toe. Had injection last September which was great but now having trouble gain. Podiatry have made lots of foot orthotics but don't work. Last visit they stated running out of ideas and did not want to give me another injection. Suggested I wear hiking boots ,which would not go down well at work. Is there somewhere in UK where you can get suitable shoes made to deal with this situation ? Also is there anything else I can do ?

Many thanks

    Hi Johnsonsyard
Thank you for your posting. I’m sorry to hear that your foot orthotics didn’t work.

Firstly you ask about shoes, the Disabled Living Foundation have information on a range of footwear. They also have a helpline: 0300 999 0004

I am wondering if you have had any physiotherapy on your toe, if not it may be worth a thought and you could speak to your doctor about a referral.

‘It is important to try to maintain a good range of motion for all the joints in your feet. Swimming can be a good and gentle exercise as you are supported by the water. It can be easier to move the joints in your feet as they will be free from the pressure of your bodyweight bearing down’

The above information is taken from Arthritis Care information: Osteoarthritis of the foot:

The following link is to Arthritis Care publications. The Healthy eating and Coping with pain booklets may be of interest to you:

I hope that’s of some help.

Please give us a ring on the helplines: 0808 800 4050 (Monday – Friday 10am – 4pm) if you would like to have an informal and confidential chat about what is going on.

    Best wishes
