Now here's a stupid question . . .

Given all that wind and rain everywhere this morning I was led to wonder . . . . what do birds do in that kind of weather? DD

They do the same as I do: shut down. Probably have a glass.

    Pretend they're at sea?

Nightingales? No, believe me: they are snug at home with a stiff grog
They are not daft after all!

Our posts crossed caliban, mine would have made more sense after DD's! I just reckoned that if they were perched in swaying trees having water chucked at them it would be a bit like being at sea, although without the seasickness presumably as I believe birds can't vomit. Grog probably not advisable - falling off perch not good move.

    yes dd
Ive got a clemaitis about 4mts high and 3mts around (its growing up an old tree stump) and all small birds go inside when its raining and go inside
to roost.there must be lots of nests inside.anything bigger than a blackbird wouldnt get in so its great cover for them.

I do remember once, in strong winds, seeing a couple of pigeons flying backwards.

I googled this and believe it or not came up with lots of answers, they can sense the change in pressure and they scarper or hide in holes and things ,some birds will stand on one leg causing the tendons in the other leg to shorten thus making the foot grip whatever they are perched on ,simple no.
I looked at birds everywhere.com. Mig

I've seen that at the seaside in windy conditions - seagulls being forced into reverse gear. I get very frustrated in windy weather, especially with Rhubarb and Custard - I sound like a one-woman-Peruvian-pipe band. Does anyone remember that group on the Fast Show?

I saw my first bird at around 4.30pm, it was one of our 'baby' collared doves who fluttered down onto our bathroom roof. It's now dark but there's been no sight or sound of our usual suspects - namely blackbirds, seagulls, robins and blue tits. I just hope that all is well with them. DD

PS Crikey Mig! Did you really do that? Oh bless you! :)

Around here they just go to the pub. It's not at all unusual to see a Starling propping up the bar, or a Pheasant playing dominoes. Our local darts team is made up of mainly Sparrows, and the Thrush's tend to hog the pool table. Even the landlord's a XXX.

We have a cd of a Peruvian pipe band .
Love rhubarb and custard especially when he tried to be a bird and put a spike on his nose. Mig

Can I just point out that a "tit" is a bird, and if you read my post you can clearly see that was the context I wrote it in.

In the words of the old nursery rhyme
"they sit in a barn to keep themselves warm and
hide their head under their wings" until it blows over.

I know Numptydumpty. I know. But there is so much confusion all around nowadays. Surely on my side of the water...It's a little bit like in "The Golden Gate" by Vikram Seth, you know.
