How difficult is it to . . . .

. . . . turn off the lights when leaving a room (or even a house) ? Especially if the lights in the house concerned aren't yet yours?

The agents for my Ma's house rang me yesterday to ask if my buyers could have a key to go round and measure for curtains. I said yes and heard no more. This morning I discovered via a neighbour that various lights had been left on around the property, burning merrily away all night long. I am still footing the bill for the utilities and I am not amused. This blasted property has cost me a small fortune in the past few days, by the time I am shot of it it will be close to £1000 which I will have paid out since its clearance. I rang the agents, explained what had happened and threatened to refuse them any further right of access.

I understand that they are excited (this will be their first proper home) but why the casual approach to someone else's property? As far as I am concerned they can leave all the lights on 24/7 once the house is theirs and they are paying the bill. DD

Thank you, you are both right. The agent has just rung, the couple want to round tomorow with their builder and the agent's have promised me that they will go round after to check that lights are off and doors are locked. I said OK. It's not easy being so far away from it, I am reliant on the kindness of strangers although the agents will get their cut of the sale price. It's about time they did something to earn it. DD

I would be very cross too. Imagine if they forgot to lock the doors! I'm always chasing around after everybody at home switching off lights ad televisions because they always forget and it makes me despair at times.

I'd be inclined to insist that the agent is there at any visit rather than letting the key out of their control.

I have to follow 'im indoors around too, tkachev - he's a great one for leaving lights on but I think that's an office habit.

Daffy? I am inclined to agree with you but I don't want to be seen as being a nuisance or obstructive. The agents' shouldn't have to 'babysit' two adults, should they? Hopefully it will all be done and dusted by 02 December so it's not long to go now. DD

It's not so much babysitting adults DD as making sure the key doesn't end up where it shouldn't, or that investigations by builders etc don't cause damage, until such time as possession of the property is finally transferred and it ceases to have any implications for you. Roll on 2nd December.

That is a very good point, Daffy, thank you. I am somewhat bewildered at the moment by all that is going on and thus losing the plot somewhat. This is why:

    1. I have signed the contract on Ma's and that will be returned to our conveyancing solicitor on Monday. I hope for completion on that very soon thereafter as the buyers are ready-to-go.

    2. We are waiting for the contract on our purchase to arrive, which hopefully will be Monday so we can get on with that. We should complete by 02 December but there is plenty of wriggle room on that because the vendor is not moving until 09 December.

    3. The legal processes of selling ours has lurched into action adn we hope to have that done by Christmas. I am thankful that we were able to sell without having to put it on the market - some estate agents are very good at what they do. :) We are fortunate in that we can move without having to sell - our late mums helped out on that, bless 'em. The conveyancer will have dealt with all four properties, a nice little earner for him.

    Roll on January. DD

How about a discount for quantity? I do hope he doesn't get confused with the paperwork, I don't imagine it's an everyday situation.

Oh Daffy, I love the thought but, after this brief spate of work, he won't be hearing from us again. :) Our executors will be dealing with the disposal of No.10 and our wishes so another will gain that work.

There could, however, be a murder case on the horizon: my husband is munching his way through an entire bag of horrid crisps and not bothering to hide the fact that he is enjoying them.

    He (and they) stink.

I'm a tad annoyed. The agent rang this morning because the lawyers concerning his seller's purchase are champing at the bit to get the contract for No. 10 signed so those further along the chain can get moving - literally. So I rang the chap who is dealing with it.

His reponse was less than satisfactory; he dictated the letter late on Friday afternoon, it should be typed up and sent today so we might get it tomorrow. 'There's no rush from my point of view,' he said. Maybe not, matey, but for those of us concerned? It is kinda important. DD
