I was watching 5News earlier and they had a report on the fact that apparently '80 is the new 40'. :D Well, whoopy-flaming-doo, isn't that just darned wonderful?

All the elderly shown in the film clip were far more mobile than me (they were dancing FCOL) and saying that life was good. :? One old dear admitted that her legs were hurting but, as she appeared to be unsupported by aids and throwing some slow-ish shapes , I couldn't understand her definition of 'hurt'. Then a five-point checklist of ageing was put on the screen: it included making a noise when one stands up from a seat (check but try not to), forgetting things (check) and not knowing the current No. 1 (I need to know because . . . . ? ) I can't remember the other two.

Those who sail in The Good Genes Boat don't have a flaming clue which must be a nice life because you don't know you're living it, you take it for granted. I usually rise above this kind of provocation but tonight? Why throw it in my face? It must be because I overdid things yesterday. And the injustice rankles . . . . .

Gets to me sometimes that my 72 year old sister who is 19 years older than me is in better shape than me and we share the same genes!

My next door neighbour popped round yesterday lunchtime to check in on me, she's 64yrs old and she kindly told me she was going for a walk round the towns lake after she had seen me. Not only was she going for a walk round the lake that evening she was going line dancing!! And she was telling me she wanted to join a Zumba club!! I was knackered just thinking about it!! When she went I just felt low, she is 23yrs older than me and I'm the one who feels like a pensioner not my next door neighbour!! What is happening! While we where sleeping did the man above swap over our brains and body with pensioners for some sick joke!!!

As many of you are aware, I'm a dab hand at several of the deadly sins  but envy's never really grabbed me. Pride and lust are my favourites though I'm pretty good at anger too. (Just ask the family  ) As far as I'm concerned, if 80 yr olds can dance or climb mountains or go abseilling then good for them and long may they enjoy doing it – just as long as they don't come on TV and cackle about how wonderful they are at their advanced age.

I knew what the No 1 was was when I was in my teens and also when my sons were in theirs. At all other times I've found it totally irrelevant to anything whatsoever. I can't sit or stand or even yawn without vocalising it now but so what?

There is more to pain and limitations than arthritis. We don't have a monopoly over them. They come in many shapes, forms and disguises. Some of the happiest people I know have had some of the toughest lives. If I envy anyone it is them as they have the ability and determination to distill happiness from the least promising raw materials.

Now, today is the first day of the ODIs against Sri Lanka. Forget envying the dancing, prancing 80 yr olds. I shall be having much more fun lusting after Alistair Cook :D

My reaction to outrageous statements like 80 is the new 40, is: great, now we will be able to live long enough that we will: suffer a long life with our arthritis, (great, I can't wait to live another 50 years like this....), live long enough to acquire some other form of chronic illness, and/or, live long enough to acquire Alzheimer's or other dementia. I don't think it's realistic to believe that very many people will remain healthy in mind and body to enjoy the long, healthy active life that is promised. A healthy diet, proper amounts of physical activity and other healthy measures in a person's life aren't the only things that will determine this.

It's a very simplistic way of looking at life, health and medicine in my somewhat cynical opinion. I don't feel jealous of older very healthy folks, I just am uncomfortable with the implication that if you are not in this elite group, then you must have done something wrong to end up ill in your younger years. I think luck pays a big part.

Firstly, I apologise for prodding a possible wasps' nest of emotion, I wasn't thinking clearly at the time of posting but wanted to get it off my very capacious chest.

Secondly,of course luck plays a part, you are spot on with that, Boomer. I reckon that most of us live with a genetic time bomb within but it's not necessarily our fault that it explodes (and neither is it the 'healthies' fault it doesn't). There is still much to learn about genes and identifying the more covert signs of auto-immune arthritis (I reckon that our lovely Barbara may be proof of that) but every now and again my acceptance of the duff relay baton of life my parents passed on gets the better of me.

Thirdly, I have two momentous occasions in life in which I take some pride, and one is the decision not to risk passing this rubbish on to yet another unsuspecting generation. My parents didn't know what they were imparting (because the medical knowledge was not there) but by the time I was sixteen the medicos had discovered there was a genetic link: I thought 'No, that's not on.' and that was the right choice. DD

PS I was overtaken by numerous old biddies and blokes today whilst in town - back to the norm.

One day I hope to be better. One day they will find a cure. In the meantime I am angry, why me? I'm glad some are dancing at 80, just don't do it in front of me, please. Too much salt in an open wound. My mother in law once said to me that my life was passing me by, in a tone that somehow it was my fault. I could do more but chose not to. She is now riddled with OA and is more understanding. Life is not good to us, can I have another one please.

The only answer to 'Why me?' is 'Why not?' We have to make the best of what we have, no matter how little it might seem to be. Of course those who don't have any long-term chronic condition won't have a clue - it's amazing how many of my friends say 'I don't do ill!' as if it's something they can control; I secretly enjoy it when they have to. DD

I don't think they have no. 1's any more. Its all download charts nowadays.

I do get frustrated when I see much older people walking about without any discomfort. I'm pleased for them but it does get to me a little bit.

There are some advantages in staggering further along life's meandering
pathways and one is the longer you live the more the government pays you
    for staying alive.
After a recent birthday I now receive an extra 25 pence per week (yes-25pence per week) in my emoluments. At current local rates I can afford to buy an extra pint of bitter 5.1 times each year of the rest of my life. Or should I save it?

Can't help thinking of the work colleague who one day told me her back had been so bad the night before she had had to take one co-dydramol before she'd gone to bed the night before, and her face when I told her I was taking 6-8 a day plus other meds.
She never complained to me about her back again!

Is just too brilliant for words, thank you Debbie :lol: still laughing since I read it first time. Black humour ftw  it doesn't half help, & that is a corker.

Illness has undoubtedly bought out the worst of my nature. It wasn't all that saintly to begin with mind you.
