Post this before but no topic. Sorry if you have seen it twice.
Well I went in Holland Barretts for cod liver oil for my oa. Spoke to the assistant she said that Red Krill Oil will be better for my Oa. Has anyone else tried them, she told me that a should feel a change in a month.
My oa has been so bad uncomfortable, gets sore so quickly.
I'll keep you all up dated how I feel.

    Hi,

I haven't tried the krill oil but the Rheumatologist I saw this week did recommend cod liver oil for my OA. I have also read recently about the benefits of Rosehip so I'm thinking of giving that a go.

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Still taken red krill oil but not sure if it affects the naproxen. So far no change but was told it may take a month .Still in a lot of discomfort/sore, seeing doc on the 17th for more help. Had to buy a walking stick which hopefully helps me walk alonger and without discomfort. But have not used it yet, but feeling down that i have to use it. i was told as long as it helps.
Dont feel to happy at the moment, feel up with discomfort all the time.

May I just emphasise that none of us should be taking any supplements without checking out first, with either a GP or pharmacist, that they will not interact with prescribed medication.

I don't know whether or not there is any research to show that Red Krill Oil helps OA but I do know that a shop assistant's job is to sell the store's products. She has no more medical expertise than you or I.

    Ask a pharmacist. They do.

I agree with Sticky, shop assistants are not docs and have products to flog. Those who claim these things help may have mild OA but for those of us who are doing it properly, well, dream on. If it worked docs would be prescribing and this forum would not exist. DD

I'm sure you've offended no-one, celebrationb and I also apologise if I gave that impression. I know that, when I'm on my tablet, I try to keep typing to a minimum and so I can sometimes come across as blunt and curt.

I do understand your desperate search for pain relief and I believe there is some evidence that cod liver oil can help OA. However, it's so important to ensure that no over-the-counter meds or supplements clash with our prescribed meds. There is a perception that, because they are 'natural' they are safe but that's not necesarily true and you're unlikely to get impartial advice from a shop assistant.

Unfortunately, there's no quick fix for OA - or even a slow one  We have to slow down, use the prescribed meds and every other technique that helps. Have you looked at some of the things listed here under 'Self-Management? http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/PublicationsandResources/Listedbysubject

For all I know Red Krill Oil might be safe for you and might help but do check it out first with either your GP or pharmacist. Better safe than sorry :)

It seems like the Red Krill Oil is the latest fad, although there is some valid research for fish oils in general as a mild anti-inflammatory and pain reducer in OA, not for RA or other arthritis'es. My advice to anyone, after clearing it with your GP to try it for 1 month or 2. If you get bad side effects, stop, if you get good results with it, let us know about it and keep it up.
I hate to say it, but OA is an incurable, age related, injury related, joint degeneration. Nothing can stop it's progression. We try to manage and cope with the symptoms of it. If someone says otherwise they are trying to sell your something!

I have to agree that there always seems to be some new magic cure in the press not just for OA but for all sorts of health problems and there is a common assumption that atural means safe. My nephew works in medical research and I was discussing this with him recently. His take is to remember that drugs are tested throughly for effectiveness and safety, but that this is no always the case with natural remedies which even if they are tested for safety do not usually undergo such strick trials. The other factor is the placebo effect which can be very strong and shouldn't be ignored. I also agree about checking with your GP, I always read the leaflets that come with my medications and one of mine actually states that you should not take any supplements while taking it.

Some things do work for some people but unfortunately there is no magic bullet.

What is a krill? Is it a shellfish? If so you can be allergic to shellfish, thats why I never took glucosamine as I am allergic to prawns and I didnt wont to take the risk. A lot of these things are better if you take them before you get the arthritis as by then it is too late. Copper bracelets work for some I believe but did nothing for me.

Of course you didn't upset anyone, far from it. I get upset because people who are relatively new to this malarkey are vulnerable to those who seek to make money from their discomfort. My mother spent a great deal of money on various pain-relieving gadgets and gizmos, and in my early days I tried everything under the sun but still ended up wrecked. There are no quick fixes or slow ones either, arthritis of any sort is a stubborn beast - once it's moved in it's staying. My arthritis does not define me, it hasn't changed who I am but it has affected how I live. Luckily I have no idea what good health feels like (and I can no longer remember my last pain-free day) so I don't know what I'm missing. It must be far harder for you and I sympathise. DD

I forgot to say that I am now taking a Vitamin D supplement (on the advice of my rheumatologist) because my level was too low. I am also sitting outside for ten minutes every day (without sunscreen) in an attempt to boost it naturally. I have to be careful though because I could trigger methotrexate rash (I take that drug for my auto-immune arthritis). Make sure you get a good daily dose of sunshine, it does help our bones. DD

I so agree DD. I get very upset with people who try to make money out of those who are vulnerable. Professionally I have been involved with a parent who was told that her son's Autism was due to an excess of mercury in his brain and could be cured! The so called "medicine" she was given consisted of a sealed small glass phial containing some miracle ingredient which she had to put, still sealed in a sports bottle of water each day and give hime to drink. Another case was a family whose daughter had a severe scoliosis and for whom the hospital recommended surgery. Instead they spent thousands of pounds on an alternative therapy which had no evidence to support it. I know these may seem extreme but they are only a few examples that I know of and they do make me angry.
It's also made me very sceptical about alternative therapies and so called "cures".

Ah, so you were taking it when you said you weren't sure about taking it. You are doing what you can to ease matters and that has to be a good thing for you. I hope you will hold the stick in the opposite hand to the wonky joint and that it is the right height, your hand should be just above your hip joint, OK? DD

    Hi celebration

I cannot make any comment on red krill oil as I take cod liver oil capsules -whether they make any difference to my health is debatable. ;)

I am a firm believer that walking is very good for us both physically and mentally and it does not cost anything. Even standing is much more beneficial to our health than sitting. I used to ride my bicycle but now I walk every day and I definitely feel better for it. I have a pedometer which keeps me in check with the number of steps I take each day.
Carry on walking if you can, it really can do nothing but good.

I was at the doc today, i mentioned red krill oil to her, she never heard of it and said maybe cod liver oil would be good. but i am not taking the krill oil as my stomach has been upset. She said to come of it for about a month and see.
Also she said that my oa maybe going through rough patch and it will never get better but will get worse. talked about knee replacement, not an option. she said to keep doing what i am doing, and if it still bad she will send me to the specialised client. She also examation my knee and said it was swollen. thats it.
My hubby said that i walk different on my bad leg and maybe thats causing the problems too.
    no good news. :(
Walked with my stick on sunday and it helps.

We rarely get good news when we have arthritis. All types of arthritis are progressive and degenerative: if you want it to progress and degenerate quicker then don't make any changes to your lifestyle and it will happily comply. I began in 1997 with one affected joint, now I'm up to around forty with two kinds of arthritis. One joint thrown out of kilter leads to others doing the same, this is how OA spreads its favours. From what you have told us there is no way that you are bad enough as yet for a new knee (and I know how unfair that sounds) and if by some miracle you are granted one and then continue with the ju-jitsu you and your surgeon won't be friends.

We all struggle on here, you are not alone in that. DD

Hi there, can you take any anti inflammatory meds or have you been prescribed any? They certain can help. Painkillers too like cocodamol prescribed by the GP. Try to keep active. That is always good to try to do and I see you are persevering with that. Keep up the good work.

These dietary supplements can upset the stomach just like anything else. As your doc says, give it a rest, get your stomach better and then, if you wish, try cod liver oil.

I wonder what your doc meant by 'specialised client'. Did she explain?

Yes, your husband is right. Walking differently on one leg can cause problems elsewhere. Have you been taught how to use the stick, celebrationb? It's very important to use it correctly. Do that and it should help. Use it incorrectly and it could make things worse.

I am on Naproxen for oa and amitripline for the fermol nerve that trapped. I meant back to the clinic that told me i had oa and had the scan on my knee. no i have not been told how to use a stick but will find out about that thank you. where do i go to learn about the stick can you help.
I try to keep active, i say i do ju jitse. I dont run, throw anyone to have access weight on my knee, dont front roll (its causes problem with my fermol nerve), dont go down on my knee at the moment, dont stretch the leg much, dont kick with my bad leg, dont be thrown (only by someone i used with and its very gentle), dont lift the leg high, dont do side to side, anything using that leg etc. sometimes i do katas without going down on my knee and weapons. It does make things hard but still there.
But i do stretches with the upper body, walk around the mats as are soft mats, seat ups and box push ups on one knee, which could be approx 20 of each. Teach the young kids. So thats i dont do much. also i strap my knee for support. but the head coach and other members are very good to me and understand. so i dont really really do it, just a litttle bits.

If you do a google search you can find guidance on using a stick correctly. I did that originally. I am now under physio and they are happy with how I use it.
