Hi

Just wanted to know if anyone gets pain in their back near the ribs? It's something I've noticed a few times when my steroids are wearing off. It starts in my lower back then my left hip has started up and now I have pain in my back near my ribs.
I'm waiting to start humira but it's really uncomfortable. I've sat at work today and as the day progresses it's got worse to the point I feel a bit dizzy and worn out with it. It feels like I've been smacked around my back! :(

    Hi tjt6768

Yea think I might ring tomorrow if it's no better. My consultant was thinking of doing an MRI and when I mentioned the lower back pain to my nurse specialist she said to keep an eye on it.

I had read you can get it in the front of your ribs. I'm just wondering if it's the back pain moving further up? I'll see a what they say.

    PS.
My rib pain has eased a lot since I started on methotrexate injections.. in fact most of the R.A pain is much better.. Just need the OA pain to go and the exhaustion too

Will do, as soon as the kenalog injection wears off my lower back, left hip and ribs flare up and it's just exhausting! My hip is hot and sore, feels swollen too.
Methotrexate helped me a bit but the side effects were bad and it wasn't controlling the joint damage. Fingers crossed the humira helps!

    Speak soon

....just been looking up and I think the rib/chest pain is down to ankylosing spondylitis. I'm not really self diagnosing as they've already said I have inflammation in my lower back into my si joints? Think this is just progression of this. Feel like I can't breathe properly.

Do I need to ring rheumatology to advise of this change do you think?

When is your next appointment with the rhuemy?
I suppose if it isn't for a while it wouldn't hurt to ring them..

I have recently had a bone density scan done on my lower back, hips and knees, checking for osteoporosis. I reckon it will be clear but you never know lol

    keep on posting :):D

I have AS and get rib pain all the time, its often worse at night and can make breathing difficult.

I suggest talking to your doctor about it at your next appointment.

Steroids do not solve a trouble, they mask it (they're brilliant con artists  ) and they bring their own troubles in the long-run so they are not a good form of 'treatment'. We are not doctors so cannot tell you what is going on, these matters are best raised with your rheumatologist. Does your department have a helpline you can ring for advice? DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi dreamdaisy
Well after an unsuccessful nights sleep I woke up just as stiff and sore. Rang and left a msg with my nurse specialist at 7:20am! She rang back around 9am and has advised on painkillers and she's going to chase up healthcare at home for my humira as I'm waiting to start that. She's also going to speak to my consultant but to be honest I think the only other thing they can do is an MRI to see what's going on.
I've rang in sick at work cos sitting is so uncomfortable! Feel sick with it. Going to go for a walk soon as miraculously my feet are ok....tho my left hip is sore!
I'm trying to stay positive and I think this is just a blip! The drugs WILL help and I will not succumb to this. Starting yoga soon and getting some good trainers today to reduce pain in my back from walking.

Thanks for the advice all, I really do appreciate it :)

Funnily enough on Tuesday morning my left shoulder (were I had steroid injection) started hurting and then my left wrist. Then in the afternoon the room started swaying and I had to hang on to settee and just made it before passing out so then I lay on the settee till other half got home from work. It seemed to ease the next day. Since then the pain in my left shoulder which was diagnosed with Inflammatory Arthritis has started again.

I regularly get pain in my ribs but mainly on the sides and it hurts to caugh or laugh. It usually lasts for a couple of days then goes away for a week or so. I also wonder if I have ankylosing spondylitis as I have a lot of hip and back pain and pain in my buttocks and back of my thighs.
