Why do females cuddle cushions?

I know that this has been going on for some time now (for 'some time' read 'years' ) but I cannot understand why younger members of my gender feel it necessary to clutch a cushion when they are feeling upset / bewildered / embarrassed or generally emotional.

Breaking news: Mr DD has just admitted that he cuddles a cushion when he feels cold  despite being a fully-paid up member of Bloke-world. Hmmmmmmm.

Suddenly I feel the urge to go and clutch a cushion.. DD

I know that Toni used to do that whenever she was watching TV.
Very strange if you ask me. I think Mr DD's Blokey membership may have to be reviewed

Hmmmmm. yup, it's a strange habit but surely something (or someone) started it. Mr DD has just audibly proved (from upstairs) his 'blokey' credentials. Deep joy. DD

I don't know but I know why teenage boys do having had two. Maybe it just caught on. Not with me though.

I have no idea, to be honest, but I've never seen the need myself.

You can thump them in frustration and they don't complain (unless of course there's a hole somewhere  ).

Well as a bloke I must say I don't cuddle a cushion if I am upset
but I do each evening when getting into a nice position to watch TV.

Aparantly I have always done this even as a kid.

    Comfort blanket syndrome, may be

This behaviour started to be seen on TV programmes didn't it? Then likely it got mimicked unintentionally????

I always thought it was to hide a jelly-belly  (some of us are forced to use a bean-bag for this)

    Maybe?????

Or as a comforter maybe as James suggets????
