Stabbing like knee pain

I've got OA in both knees, especially the right one.

As well as the usual pain, at night I experience a kind of shooting, stabbing type of pain, starting at the outside of my right knee, going down.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas how to cope with it? So far I’ve tried pillow between legs, ice packs/ cold gel, painkillers, getting up and moving. The lack of sleep is driving me nuts.

Only 51 and I feel like an old woman...

I’ve had OA diagnosed in my hips but pretty sure it’s in my knees as well. I get the pains you describe, although it is most likely referred pain from my hip, as this didn’t happen till my hip started caving in. . Simply sitting or lying comfortably seems to reduce how often it happens, but sometimes one comes from nowhere and clouts my knee even when sitting still. I haven’t really found the cause or cure, other than mollycoddling my rubbish hip and deep breathing when the pain kicks in until it recedes. The better my hip is feeling, the less often this happens, so maybe that will help for your knee too. I find a hot wheat bag helps settle it down when I’ve been overdoing it, so might work for you too?

Hmmm.....I get this sometimes, but usually in my foot of all places.....just as I try to go to sleep🙄 I usually up my pain meds and add my Arcoxia (anti-inflammatory). In my case it happens for a few days at a time, but if it never stopped I would speak to my GP I think.

Yes, I do. Comes & goes out of nowhere when resting with the telly in the evening, in bed. No, I don't know a cure, sorry. Medication doesn't really help, neither analgesia nor anti-inflammatory. I change positions frequently to try & avoid/placate. Living alone allows for eccentric & unseemly positions! Best wishes.

I get that exact pain, it's excrutiating and no position is comfortable. I also get it when sat in the car, from my knee down. I was taking Zapain and ibuprofen and using biofreeze. It took the edge off, but just had a total knee collapse, the muscles/tendons round the knee went so I've been on crutches for 2 weeks, saw a musculoskeletal specialist who told me to ice it for 20 mins twice a day and then use ibuprofen gel along with some exercises. I must admit, its helping.

    Hi Coffeecup

I get a dull ache on the outside of my right knee going down the calf, not so much a stabbing pain. I find painkillers help, my Dr. prescribed me with Naproxen and Fenbid Ibuprofen Gel. Even with a dull ache I still try and do some of my physio exercises as they do help sometimes. Other times I just have to try and rest it as much as possible.

So many ups and downs, but I try and keep positive and it helps me to be able to speak to other people on here with similar symptoms.

    You are not alone.🙂
