New diagnosis

Hi I’ve just been diagnosed with OA Of the knee after severe acute pain and a trip to a&e. I was given pain killers and a fact sheet with exercises etc but the pain is not subsiding and I can’t bend my knee still. I wondered how long it might be before it will settle down so the pain goes and I can walk properly again. I’m trying to rest but have a 6 year old. I’ve ordered glucosamine chondrites today and am using voltarel gel along side the painkillers

any tips or help in what to do next would be helpful. I’ve got a call with my go tmw.

Thank you for posting on the forum.

I am sorry to hear about the pain you are experiencing in your knee, it sounds as if you have got your work cut out trying to rest and manage a 6-year-old.

I can see you have had a reply from Peter which I hope you will find useful, the links should give you quite a lot of information on how to manage your knee. OA is largely self-managed with healthy eating, keeping weight down and keeping moving. You may also be interested to know there is a drug-free, effective, and very well-tolerated painkiller called capsaicin, available on prescription for osteoarthritis. Capsaicin is a herbal medicine made from the pepper plant (capsicum), which works mainly by reducing a pain transmitter in the nerves. You could talk to your GP about this, as well as a referral to a physiotherapist, who could give you a programme of exercise for your knee.
