I'm Gordon, 64 and recently diagnosed with RA after finally visiting a specialist to understand why I keep getting unexplained wrist pain and slight crooking of my fingers - the medical people have diagnosed methotrexate but I'm unsure about taking it it due to potential side effects. I've never taken medication of any kind and don;t really want to start now

Hello @Gordon57 and welcome to the online community,

You've just been diagnosed with RA and have been prescribed methotrexate. Understandably you’re unsure about starting treatment because of the side effects. All our members have experience of living with arthritis and many are on methotrexate- you’ve come to the right place to find out a bit more about the medication and other people’s experiences of it. There have been many discussions amongst members about the drug and if you type methotrexate in the search bar above you’ll see a list of recent posts - you might find some of your questions and concerns addressed here. Despite the side effects, I think you’ll find that most people do really well on it and it helps them to live a more pain-free life.

It’s always useful to learn as much about your condition and treatment as possible, and again, you’ve come to the right place. Versus Arthritis has a comprehensive website that I’m sure you’ll find useful. Below is a link to some information on methotrexate which talks about what to expect when you start on the treatment:

I’m sure other members will be pleased to welcome you to the community- do have a look round and see if there are other topics that interest you and feel free to join in any conversations.

Do let us know how you get on,

    Anna ( Mod)
