Hello, I don't have RA, but I just wanted to wish you well with the tablets. The injectons sound horrible to give you such a bad reaction. Hope all goes well for you now, Love Sue0

Hi Sarah
So far am ok on hydroxy, but I am interested in how you get on. Have had anti-sickness tabs in the past meta-something and they worked with things like tramadol. A friend who has cancer drugs had them too and they helped him on end.
I hope you can get some releif AND not be so nauseous - that's HORRIBLE!!
Goood luck

Hi Frogmorton
Sorry to hear you can't cope with the injections. I had to have injections because my stomach was not dispersing the tablets into my system. Because of the stomach problems I was experiencing.
Are you taking your folic acid tablets? These are suppose to help with the side effects of the MTX.
Hope you settle down soon. Feeling sick the whole time is not nice.

thanks for the replys everyone and yes i am taking my folic acid everyday except metho day, another question id like to ask is does everyone get their folic acid precribed by their gp or just buy it over the counter from the chemist reason i ask is i pay for my prescriptions  and thought it might be cheaper to just buy over the counter :?:0

Hi
Yes you can buy Folic Acid cheaper at the chemist. Holland and Barrett is £4.99. I don't know about strength though. You can get |Folic Acid in your daily diet also and it would be good to check this further.
I started getting free prescriptions when I was sixty and prior to that I use to pay a yearly sum, which I expect you do. There should be a way in which sufferers of the arthur should get free prescription no matter what age they are.

Hi
I was told by the pharmacist that prescription folic acid
is much stronger than the type you can buy over the counter.
I take 5mgs per day except for MTX day.

hi, i started on tablets 25mg, then due to sickness i went onto injections. they were fine for about 4 months then i started with the sickness again, often starting an hour or so after i injected and carried on for anything upto 3 days, even anti sickness only helped a little so now i'm back on tablets but at a lower dose, 20mg. i'm just finding i still feel sick and the lower dose is not doing anything for pain either. i have to see rheumy nurse next month so i'll let you know how that goes, but basically i've had enough of mtx and sixkness0

Hi,
i take methatrexate by injection to, I don't know if this might help but i inject mine at night just before bed. inject have a good drink eg water!!! and a small snack and then hit the sack i find that i sleep of any side effects - i dont get sick if i take in day but get a headache! not sure if this helps but thought i would share.
As for folic acid, my doctor did say before when i didnt pay my pre-payment card that i could just by over counter, but every doc says different!
good luck with ur methetraxate and i hope your problems can be sorted soon

I think I have already posted my experiences of MTX and why I had to change from tablets to injections, inflammation of the stomach and the fact that my stomach may not have been dispersing the drug into my system.
Well, yesterday was injection day, 15 mg, which, by all accounts, is quite a low dose. I woke up very early feeling a bit sick, but not too badly. After breakfast, I spent all morning feeling decidedly off colour. Perhaps I had bit of bug, or may be a chill. I did feel extra achy.
What I really want to know is, does anyone experience sharper arthr pains than normal, e.g. knee caps, ankle joints, toe joints hands, in fact, anywhere that you have a problem? The more acute pain that I experience usually passes after 24 hours.
I would like to know if it is normal to feel extra pain after having the medication

HI
just a thought for those of you who are worried about affording medication .....
if you need a total of more than 14 prescriptions in 12 months or 4 in 3 months then you would be better off buying a Prescription Pre-payment Certificate
(PPC) as this one-off payment will cover all your medication for either the 3 months or the 12 months, however many you need.
Also, if you choose the 12 month option and pay by direct debit, you can pay in 10 monthly instalments.
We couldn't manage without ours - we both have one.
More info from your pharmacist or online at

hope that helps!!0
