HI,
need to pick a few brains as mine doesn't know
Dad wants to buy a DVD for his granddaughter who is soon to visit from the states.
I think he needs to make sure to buy an all regions DVD but is this right?
I think we are in Region 2 but they must be something else ...... also do they have a different system for DVD's (like they did for videos) or just the region thing?
It is a case of the blind leading the partially sighted with this one as dad doesn't do technology at all
thanks for any help you can give!
:? :?

I do believe that the USA are region 1 but you can buy DVD's for all regions at places like HMV etc.
Hope that helps

The first problem is that it is illegal to sell Region 1 DVDs in or to the UK, but that's nothing to do with Region coding, but because they're not BBFC certified.
The USA uses Region 1 and the UK uses Region 2 and they will only play on their respective players.
The other problem is that you shouldn't really try it out on your computer. If you tried to play it on a computer, your DVD drive is defaulted to Region 2, when you insert any other region (except 0) you are given the option of changing the Region. However you can only do this about five times, after the fifth time your DVD drive will be locked to whatever Region last used.
Perhaps a gift voucher for the amount would be better?

You can also use your PC/Laptop to play DVDs. I use the PC to watch any Region 1 DVDs I import0

thanks Joseph, as ever you are a mine of very useful info ....... I will tell dad to err on the side of caution, that way he can't get it wrong and disappoint them by buying the wrong thing in the shops

Some region 1 discs are sold in the UK but in general most arn't legal to sell, Amazon do and other small outlets may well but the later will probably be breaking the law Amazon will have a exemption to do so. Personally I wouldn't worry what region it comes from and I wouldn't pay much attention to the rules if you have a multi region player, the main reason for 3 regions is so they can charge more for the same disc in other countries, it's the same for CD's I get mine on line some from outside the UK due to price.
If my unit was multi region then I would just get it.
What I wouldn't do however is purchase a boot leg copy mainly due to quality but also I don't mind paying an artist for their hard work, if it was my work being boot legged I woludn't be happy that's for sure. it's for this reason I don't down load of the Russian sites they are dodgy as hell and mostly run by mafia types.0
