there seems to be a lot of support for using ice massage ( paper cups full of forzen water ) as a from of pain control...apparently its a better way of dealing with inflammation than ibuprofen etc ...and is also free of side effects...apart from the cold ..lol
the idea seems to be freeze the painful area ( in my case, ankle) and once the ice is removed ...body thinks...ohh...this area needs blood and circulation..and forces it into the area...thus easing pain and inflammation ?
anyone tried it ?
what about self massage, rubbing with deep heat type creams ?
I have one called capsican from doctor but havnt used it yet ?

Hi bluebeard... I had ice packs on my neck and spine at a back class a few years ago, this was done by the physiotherapist ....
it is an instant pain relief, I use the ice packs now for the pain in my shoulders when I get a banging headache and my shoulder is throbbing along with it ... I find the cold helps more than the heat some of the time .... It works for me, everyone is different … i have not heard of cups of ice but i use a small bag of frozen peas some times ...
I also use the massage creams they are not so much pain killers, more the massage helps to interrupt the severity of the pain, for me, help to stops it getting worse .... that’s if your lucky enough to have someone to massage or rub the affected areas, if its your shoulder or spine you would not be able to reach …
I find them beneficial to me … I was unfortunate to be allergic to the ibuprofens and this seemed to be in a lot of the medication for arthritis … so massage has played a huge part in my treatments ….
also hydrotherapy is good , has anyone tried this ?

Personally I prefer to apply heat on pain but after my total knee replacement it was always ice and this felt absolutely great. It numbed the knee, hence no pain for a time and definitely eased swelling.
Massage is very beneficial, I feel. If we knock ourselves, for instance, it is an automatic reaction to say ouch or similarand then to rub the area that has been hurt. We all do that.
I massage my thumb, shoulder and unoperated knee when they are painful without any creams or anything and it eases the pain somewhat for me.

I find using ice followed immediately by heat to be the best method for me.
20 minutes with the frozen peas, then twenty minutes with a hot water bottle, or heated wheat bag works really well.........Ange.0 -
I prefer heat, but when my feet were bad over Xmas, my rheumy told me to use ice to cool them down. It wasn't pleasant, but it worked!0

I think ice seems to be used more as a therapy for twisted ankles, bruised muscles etc ...but I am sure it could be helpful in other areas ?0
