31 years ago I had a "gold" injection once a week for two years. It was very closely monitored and did me the power of good. My joints are only damaged by OA, not RA.

My lovely then Rheumy is now retired but on his instructions I kept the record card which I showed to my present Rheumy. "Why was the gold discontinued?" he asked. "Well because I had improved 100% I suppose" was the only retort I could think of :oops:

Methotrexate was a no no for me and I've now been prescribed Sulfasalazine and if that "fails" then it'll be onto one of the bio jobbies.

I've recently had a R TNR and have got a pre op assessment for a L THR next week.

I guess I'm answering my own question here but do you think I should ask to go back on the gold if the other routes don't help :?

    Well i dont know anything about the gold injections but if it worked so well before why dont they just give you them again. what have you taken since then, if you dont mind me asking? or did the RA go for those years and is now back?
    sorry im abit nosey :oops: i have RA too.

    I would ask if I was you. A friend of mine has them and they really have helped her so much. I am not sure what criteria they use for it but there isn't any harm in asking I guess? Good luck though and could you let us know please. Take care Cris

    Thanks for the reply Page. The RA was "minimal" for all those years in between and I just took prescribed painkillers but in recent years it's bitten me on the bum again :) Well I can't expect to be perfick at 65 can I, lol

    Interesting thing was that my original Rheumy did much research, widely published, about RA in post partum mums. My youngest son was 6 months old when I developed it.

    Cherry, this is very interesting,
    i was 32yrs when mine started and my daughter 14months i had just stopped breastfeeding, im now 34.
    can you tell me the name of this man so i can read some of his findings?
    sorry its come back for you, but the gold did work so well, who knows it could again :D

    I've googled and can't find the specific :oops:

    However his name was Jan Wotjulewski and his research was based on the premise that whilst pregnant a hormone called "pag something or other" protected the mum from RA. After delivery the hormones waned.

    He checked Mums under 40 over a three year period to see how they had fared. At that time he was doing his research for Guys Hos. but was based in Eastbourne

    I'm sorry but it doesn't seem to be on the net any more, only his name and other things relating to him :oops:

    Hi Cherry,

    It is odd returning to the world of arthritis after such a long gap. My RA has flared up again after a reprive of 17 years and I've struggled to get my head round how much treatment has changed.

    My Rheumy (same one as I had all that time ago!) refused to let me have another steroid jab as I had already had 4, which confused me as there had never been a limit on it before. First line treatment these days seems to be Dmards (which I had never heard of!) and gold has gone out of fashion now, I think, which is such a shame when it has worked so successfully for you in the past. My friend also had good sucess with it (her arthritis started not long after giving birth to her 2nd child).

    I'd ask for gold - your rheumy may try and persuade you to use a more modern treatment but you never know!

    I'm on my 4th week of sulpha and still don't fully understand how it works!
