I have pains pretty much everywhere, including my shoulders, elbows and wrists. Although the pain in my elbows is only really noticable when I put pressure on it by leaning against something or lifting something heavy. I cant answer about the heat rubs as Ive never tried but I suppose anything is worth a try to relieve some of the pain right?

Im new to all this myself so Im still learning but this is a great site to get some answers.

Sorry to hear your feeling low, I can sympathise as Im on anti-depressants myself.

I`m afraid the answer to your first question Sylvia, is a resounding yes. Sorry.

I have some OA in both shoulders, although the left one is the worst.

I find that fifteen minutes ice - frozen peas - followed by 15 minutes heat - hot water bottle - helps. Then I slap on some Voltorol gel, which you can buy OTC.

I have also changed my car, from manual to automatic, and that has made a huge difference.

You could ask your GP to refer you for some physio. Although I personally did not find that helpful, you might.........Ange.

hi ange thanks i thought that what it might be this is better than getting an appointment at the doctors even though we still need to go :) but one important thing is that we are the experts as we have to live with it dont we :) given the choice no one would want to, imagine that being free from athritis and never having the pain, i can but dream :)

Hi Olly and everyone else there. 5 weeks ago I had my shoulder joint replaced because it was totally kaput and nearly all the pain has gone. The pain used to reach right down to my knuckles. I totally sympathise with you because when your shoulder hurts your whole arm becomes pretty useless, eh? and not many people realise how limiting it is until it happens to you. I found that heat really helped but you might find that an ice pack helps. Also, in bed at night try putting a pillow under your arm on the sore side-that helped me. when it was really sore I used to use a scarf and make a sling to support the arm-this took the strain off my shoulder. I hope you get some relief from your pain soon Olly.
    cheers

Hi Sylvia,I've been suffering with shoulder pain for a few months and the pain is also affecting the top of the arms down to the elbow. Some days I have a job lifting my arms to comb my hair.Had a steroid injection in the shoulder a few weeks ago but it didn't work.Had a systemic steroid injection last week and still no relief from the pain. :( Do you find the shoulder pain is worse at night? After being in bed for a while the pain sets in worse and the rest of the night I'm tossing and turning trying to get into a comfortable position.I don't seem to have any strength in the arms and I'm sure it's due to the shoulder pain. The past week the pain has moved up into the neck which has only made things worse.Do hope you will be able to get some pain relief,I have every sympathy for you.Breane.x

    Hi Breane,
I have neck and shoulder problems like you and have problems getting comfortable in bed.
During the day when I am working at my computer they are not too bad though doing manual stuff (shopping etc) hurts.
At night its terrible not knowing which side to sleep on, first left then right and up I get for tablets and TV. :(
I am back at the hospital in two weeks now I have had my MRI scan to see what can be done, lets hope they can.
Like you have had injections in my shoulders and they haven't worked.

    take care

Hi, I have OA in quite a few joints, including my neck and shoulder, yesterday I told my physio about the shoulder pain being bad and she gave me some very simple exercises to keep the shoulder moving and to stop it, as she put it, rusting up . Heat or ice wrapped up in a cloth help too. My physio said that OA people tend to prefer heat and I am one of those!

She also gave me the ARC (Arthritis Research Campaign) booklet on shoulder OA, which explains it all and she wated to give me a book of general OA, explaining things, but they had run out!

If you ring the Helpline here, number at the top right side of the page, they will send you all the information you need and talk to you about anything you are unsure about. They are very good, give it a try. :)

I hope all goes well for you and that you soon feel better.

    Love Sue

Hi all, my shoulder is painful, told the gp she said its the oa in my neck the nerve is being nipped so sends pain down neck and shoulder , altgho the pain can travel right down my arm , it hurts mainly in the middle of the arm , also the pain in my shoulder feels at times like I have just had a needle injection in it and waiting for the pain to subside ( only thing is the pain takes days for it to go away ) hazel is getting a lot of pain in her shoulder but that is due to her Fibromayglia.

I have osteoarthritis in my neck, spine and hips.
I had my mind put at ease some weeks ago because an Xray showed me that my hips were not too bad as bad as I thought.
The problem is in my back mainly where nerves get trapped along your vertabrae and this is what causes the pain in your muscles, shoulders and legs.
When this happens, then it helps to use hot and cold as Sue has said.
For myself,I have been going to a chiropractor because OA responds well to it. You needto talk to your GP first or Consultant and both of them were very supportive of the idea. Unfortunately they do not come on the NHS. My first chiro was £40 for the assessment and treatment and thereafter each session was £28.
I started going 2 or 3 times a week and then once a week and now I am going onces a fortnight. And, of course, I am sleeping a lot better.

Osteopath is too heavy a treatment for it.
I have found that my walking has improved, going up and down stairs was better yesterday. I also use a TENs machine at times
