had to see a Cardiologist today as I have breathless problems as well as pain, told him am having an op for a TWR on 28th September ( go in on 27th) anyway today he said he cannot let me have it done if he has not got a good come back of a scan done on my heart, so got to wait for the scan again over in Southampton then wait for results and see if I can then go ahead, he said if its bad news things may need doing before any wrist ops are risked being done, he says it could well be my diabetes causing heart problems as its been unstable for a while now both parents have heart problems , he said if I had it done before the all clear, the outcome could be tragic, oh well here i go again he said my OA has damaged so many joints for some one my age , Yes I know I felt like saying lol
got home to find my 6 year old Grandaughter Kassidy is seeing my Rhumatologist as soon as possible she has joint pains in her hip and leg ( knee) he might well refer her to mainland Dr, also she being tested for diabetes,
BUT what I need to know is there any type of arthritis that can affect my heart ???? am feeling totally fed up, today has been a bad day,:cry:

I am so sorry. This is the last thing that you need. I cannot help in anyway but I am thinking (and I will think of you) over the next few days. Take care. DD

Hi Lavenderlady and so sorry you have had such bad news today. I believe that, in some cases, RA can have an effect on the heart, but I don't think that OA does - other perhaps than indirectly due to restrictions on mobility. I know it will be awful if you have to wait for your op but it sounds as if it is essential that the cardiac things are addressed first. Do you know how long you will have to wait for a scan?

So sorry too to hear about Kassidy's problems. Hopefully she will get an appointment really quickly.

    Thinking of you.

    Love Tilly x

    Hi Lavenderlady

Gosh, you have got it rough at the moment. I know that sometimes RA can affect the heart in the long-term.

I hope you can have the cardiac problem sorted out quickly so that you can have your TWR.

I also really hope that Kassidy's appointment comes through very soon..

Let us know how you both get on..

Hello lavenderlady, thinking of you. Take it easy today and try to distract yourself with a good book or some trashy telly. Try not to brood - which I am fully aware is a STUPID thing to say but whirling thoughts do not help. If some more spleen needs venting, here's the place to do it - we'll listen. DD

I am hoping you are feeling a bit more upbeat today.

I an so glad you are being checked properly before yor op - you know your family would be devastated if something happened to you :(

I am sending lots of good vibes to your little grandaughter hoping that all will be well with her.

thanks for your good wishes it really helps I am on a mission today to find out anything that might stop my 15 year old daughter and obvioulsy my Grandchildren especially Kassidy shes 6 from inheriting arthritis, as its really affected mums side of the family I now know what my poor nan suffered she had both OA and RA, mums got OA and has had a TKR,
but my daughter has hyper mobility joints, and very long fingers so am really wary of her having to cope with arther in any form, any idea what to look for or do will be much helped, as for yesterdays bad day, i am now determined to get my scan done asap and get it sorted before my op,
Kassidys feeling a little better but cannot walk far on her leg and hip, just hope its not arthritis so young

    Hi Lavenderlady,

Its good they are looking out for you though and with luck the heart scan will be ok. I really hope the results come back soon for you. I also seriously hope Kassidy will be seen soon and its not arthritis. What a lot you have worries for there. I can't say anything to help but will be thinking of you both. ((())) and hopes, Cris x

I don't think there's much hope of stopping it. It's an inherited genetic condition, one just has to grit one's teeth and get on with it. I received the asthma and eczema of my childhood from my mother's family (her grandmother died from an asthma attack, four hours after the only picture we have of her was taken) and her mother (my gran) had multiple food allergies. The psoriasis comes from my father's side - he had very mild psoriasis in later life, his brother in America turned into The Singing Detective virtually overnight in his mid 80s (and has now wiped out his life savings in paying for treatment). My parents both enjoyed good health, as these things can and do skip generations. Lucky ol' me is the wondrous mixture of the lot. DD

    That's the attitude Lavendarlady

You get that scan done so you can have your op. It's the best thing you can do for all of them. then you will be stronger to face anything else that gets thrown at your family.

I am still fervently hoping little one is ok.

    Love and hugs

Glad to see your fighting spirit today lavenderlady! Just wanted to say though that, whilst it's good to do the research, please don't fall into the trap of feeling responsible for preventing any future arthritis for your daughter or granddaughter. That will only add to your stress and worry. Probably the most practical thing you can do is to do what you are already doing - ie being aware of the possible early signs of arthritis so that if it does appear, heaven forbid, treatment can be started early.

In terms of your scan, good luck with getting an appointment soon!

    Love Tilly x

thankyou all so much Kassidy is feeling a little better but her right knee and wrist were both swollen red and hot to touch, poor little girl already has kidney problems, I told her we'll both go in hospital together keeping each other company lol she said but Nanny you cant come in the childrens ward you are much too old , nice one Kass,
I'm thinking of starting daughter on some sort of herbal medication , talking of which when I was a child I use to eat Vasoline from the jar with a spoon  yes really, mum always said at least she wont have joint problems as they are getting well greased, famous last words, :o
any one else taking herbal and what would you suggest for 15 year old daughter ????

Well, it's not herbal as such but I guess fish oils or an oil/glucosamine mix might be appropriate. Glucosamine isn't such a good idea if it's an inflammatory arthritis as that is supposed to promote the manufacture of synovial fluid, but there are many things and combinations out there. Have a look on the healthsapn website for things: cheaper than H&B and better quality. Calcium tablets might be another idea, to promote bone strength. Would she take them tho? It's hard to see into the future when you're only 15! Good luck with the research - what do you take? DD

    Hi Lavender
only just found this thread but your first post rang so many bells with me. Have diabetes, asthma and now diagnosis of Arthritis - jury is still out on what type. Also investigated for heart probs - similar family history too.
On a bad day it all seems too much, on a better day it seems plain ridiculous - feel like a hypochondriac except I actually do have all these diseases!
Wish I could give you some amazing nugget of advice but all I can say is keep smiling - even if it is through gritted teeth!
Loved your story about the Vaseline - my mum used to make me eat copious amounts of cod liver oil in malt ( a sort of unpleasant tasting brown sludge) so that I would grow up healthy. Needless to say I didn't make my own lot eat it!!
    love and hugs

Calves foot jelly. My mum used to shovel that down me like there was no tomorrow. Didn't that work well? NOT! DD

    hi lavenderlady its me again
i have had a heart op i always used to think it all come from my spinal problem. as it would start with a movement ie opening a door
picking something up not heavy just a book a bottle of pop!! all would start it off 260bpm. tachicardic (spellling not good!!) when i asked the drs if it was from the back problem OR OA they were always a bit evasive. SO I THINK SO BUT IM NO EXPERT JUST A SUFFERER :) drs dont have all the answers and if they do theyr not saying!! :?
i also get breathless through asthma COPD and i dont move too fast at all.
i had to have my heart done before i could have any spinal steroid injections, so i had the heart op in the hopes that spinal steroids would FIX me. but of corse they did not. but look on the bright side the old ticker is ticking in time a bit better :D
good luck and hope your little girl is fine

Cor bambi, you have been thro the mill with everything, haven't you? I like the 'I'm no expert, I'm just the patient' line: I think we all become experts about ourselves, 'cos we know ourselves so well! Nice to see you posting. DD
