Hi everyone one.
I was sat watching tv the other night and noticed that when i bend my thumbs they turn inwards and are bent. i havent noticed this before and was wondering if it was the arthritis. i have been told it is inflammatory arthritis and thats it at the moment. a few other names have been mentioned but nothing formal. on the one thiumb the both knuckles are about 50% bigger than the other thumb.
is there anyone else with crooked fingers / thumbs? how did it start?? is this the start of somehting more serious??

Hi bailey
I'm not sure from your description whether you have similar to me or not. I have finger joints that bend the wrong way (best way of describing it!) so that the middle joint bends downwards and the tip of the finger goes upwards.
I've just recently been told it's 'swan neck deformity' (other fancier name is Boutonniere's deformity). If you google it you can see if that's what you have or not.
I also have thumb joints (middle and base) that after years of inflammation now are much larger than they were before.... but I can still use both thumbs and neither is painful any more.
I've maybe added to your confusion.... sorry if that's the case.

It's not quite the same but my swollen thumb joint(at the base) has got much better and is a lot smaler since on anti-TNF. Just wanted you to know that it might improve,

hi thanks both
the tips of my fingers are fine. the knuckles on back of hand are quite red and slightly swollen. the one thumb is significantly bigger than the other.
if i put the plams of my hands together in front (as if i am going to dive into a swimming pool) and then bend the thumbs the thumb nail urns outwards and twists outwards too. i dont have much pain in the joints just a bt stiff / achey. The worse thumb cant bend as much as the other either.
It isnt too painful and hasnt cause me any concern until i noticed it looked odd.0 -
