Plenty of nice things left from my shopping yesterday.. there's a nice fruit cake (cherries & sultanas) with that crunchy sugar on top, individual choc cake slices or choc wafer biccies if you prefer.. will be glad of another cup of tea, I have been on the phone for over 2 hours on & off since this pm  catching up with a couple of friends, had to slightly bribe myself to make the calls with the promise of a couple of unopened parcels in the post from yesterday.. terrible isn't it. Happy to talk to the people really but it's always mixed thing, phone calls.
Have been watching a little of the D-Day coverage myself in between things so was soon 'off'.. better to be maudlin (lovely expressive word,) and to think about things and not shy away from them, and yes to think of both sides. Despite all the understandable sentiment & anti-german propaganda that would have been uppermost at the time most soldiers would have known & at some level that their counterparts were only ordinary men with families & as you say, under orders. And there are the stories of unexpected friendships, temporary truces & alliances, and post-war meetings & reconciliation between opposing sides
My friend said she did not like the Queen's lime green outfit so that added a trivial lighter note to proceedings.
Will be glad of a quiet evening & weekend, weather doesn't look fantastic but better the second half of next week.. maybe. Hope everyone has a good weekend too. xx
Will leave kettle primed if Applerose makes a late call.0 -
Hello Toady again
I do not like the phone full stop, and like you have to work up to calling people or even answeringnot nice I know..
talking of frendships my dad brought home some German ice skates..forget now what he swopped them for, but it goes to show they were all in the same boat has it were..if only they had learned something from it..and no I didnt like the Queens outfit..I hhave taped most of the D day ..I love history and how things come about
think I will have a peice of your cake before bed, I have just put some shoes on ebay , a pair of mine and some riding boots oftmy gds..so im excited to see how they do..see you in the morning..hope everone sleeps well xxxxxxLove

Barbara, at least there's not much longer for your son to wait for his op. it'll be over before you know it. Not sure you can buy the spacer from the chemist. You might have to get it from your GP on prescription. I managed to see some of the D-Day tv coverage. Had to turn it off in the end as I kept crying. It's terrible to think that some of our families have been to war. They should never need to. Good luck with your shoes and boots on Eb*y.
Elizabeth I don't know anything about my family who were in the war. Only seen pictures of my gran's brothers in uniform. Really wish I knew more. Hope you son has had a good day and that Charlie has turned up. It's lovely sitting in the sun, isn't it but I hope it didn't make you itch too much.
Toady, isn't it good thinking you've got an extra day. I begrudge spending an hour cooking when it's all gone in a minute. Don't mind if I'm cooking for a few people but not for myself. I do enjoy eating though. It is good catching up with friends on the phone but I take forever getting round to it. I remember my dad telling me about the day, I think it was Xmas Day, when both sides put down their arms and played football together in no-man's land so, you are right, they were all ordinary men carrying out orders. The queen's outfit was rather bright, wasn't it? Thank's for leaving the kettle on. Think I'll have a cuppa.
I was supposed to get on with my painting this afternoon but decided to make the most of the weather so spent a while in the garden. Managed to do a little weeding around the pond. It's choc-a-block with plants and some things are getting hidden. Weather is supposed to be quite bad tomorrow and not much better on Sunday.Hope you all have a good weekend.

Good Morning café friends
It's thunder and lightening hereso I reckon anyone who got out yesterday did the right thing!
Poor Daisycat had just gone out and came running back in shrieking!!!
I hope your son had a good birthday yesterday Elizabeth and that Charlie made it down to see him/you all
I didn't get out yesterday as Lucy had another Intrathecal...yah boohbut glad you did Christine - it was a lovely day wasn't it?
Barbara I am pleased for you that your son is going to have his op sooner rather than later.
I also watched some of the D-Day TV coverage before setting off for the hospital - it was lovely so moving.
Toady well-done for making your telephone calls I bet you feel better for having done soI quite liked the Queen's outfit, but think I am the only one  She is doing so well isn't she? and the Duke too.
Joan I hope you are well and Sue and of course little Peppa
Mig I rather like the idea of a coach tour you know...can't plan any holidays ATM with Lucy being in treatment, but hopefully soon-ish.
love to you all

Morning all
Dark and pouring down here..suppose I wont need to water the garden..
Thanks Toni, mig, Christine and Toady for your good wishes for my son
Christine much better to get in the garden like you say indoor jobs can wait for the rain...blimey the way things are going we should all have palaces..I remember my dad telling us about the Christmas day truce...sums it all up really
Toni I see we are all going on the coachI can just see the first time you go back to France with Lucy..and it will come...these things do make you appreciate things more...
Mig..I am not sure I could do the steps on a coach at the min..but it must be brilliant having someone else drive and take you to see different places
Today we have 3 GC coming, mum and daddy stay with the baby has I cant lift her..or chase round after her..but she is so good..

Loads to catch up on so while I'm waiting for my Daughter to arrive with the chocolate birthday cake I'll read through.
Must say I didn't like the Queen in the pink outfit as it as far too tame but loved the lime green.
Toni we have been looking at houses online in Scotland. They are so cheap and in beautiful countryside. we had such a palava with 3 very noisy cars yesterday, just because the sun is shining. France is lovely too because they have a slower pace of life and I'd love to visit all the castles. No way can I stay here throughout the Summer holidays.
Barbara I expect all this waiting has been difficult for your Son and he just wants it over with.
Applerose it was so lovely sitting in the sun but I was meant to have a sleep. OH started hoovering and then tidying and polishing, he does have these moments sometimes! So I felt in-the-way and ended up sitting in the garden which was just as nice. Earlier our resident fox was sitting sunning himself which makes me a little bit nervous. You have to keep the pond clear as it builds up so quickly and weeding is a never ending job. I need to cut the brambles which seem to be springing up next to my penstemons and hollyhocks. I did have a couple of delphiniums but they seem to have disappeared. Its a raised bed so the only bit I can manage.
We had OH's sister and her Daughter round and it was all very pleasant.
We had a small rumble of thunder but nothing as bad as expected. Poor Daisy cat.
I enjoyed watching the DDay coverage and what beautiful weather. It is sad to think so many lost their lives on both sides.
Well I'm still waiting for Charlie. I hope the trains aren't playing up like last time?
Bubbles still hoping all is well.

Hi Barbara, Joan, Mig, Applerose, Toady.
It started off sunny, although we heard a few thunderclaps in the distance - or was that you mig?
Brilliant news about your son Barbara, although a bit scary too. If he's anything like me, he will be ok until about an hour before his op, then the nerves will hit. Hope all goes well.
I watched quite a bit of the D-Day celebrations yesterday. I didn't like the Queen's outfit either. I normally think she gets it right, but lime green seemed a bit too much for the occasion. My dad was only 8 when the war started, but his dad fought in Italy with one battalion, then moved to a different one to go to Africa. He also fought in the first world war, but never spoke of his experiences. Dad couldn't even do National Service when he became old enough as he had suffered from Pleurisy when a teenager and he was colour blind. He was very frustrated as he had one brother in the army and one in the navy, so he wanted to join the air force. Oh well, these things are sent to try us."Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." Robert A Heinlein

After the morning rain we have sunshine now.
When i saw the queen at the D-day ceremonies i thought oops wrong choice of colour but then i thought about it and realised it was a good choice for the veterans many must have failing vision as they are getting older but with that colour they would be able to pick her out easily. They fought for king and country and should be able to see their monarch. So good choice.Mig0 -
Evening all
Mig good thinking ..it would make the queen stand out so they could see were she was..I am so blinking proud of all who died and fought..on both sides..please let us learn a lesson from it...
Joan it was the same here sun rain then sun but more rain...I am sorry you got wet ...hopefully tomorrow will be nice.
Elizabeth Scotland would be lovely and quiet..and France well like you say the pace of life...wonderful..and the food and the countryside..and going off what Toni posted the property's are so cheap...think I might join you..I do hope Charlie gets there I know you are looking forward...hope your son gets his cake...yes I think you are right my son is tired of waiting
Kath ..thankyou...you might be right he will get nervous just before the op it is always hard to get info out of the veterans..I just wish I had recorded my dad when he was ill..he started to talk about the war so much more than he ever had...my dad went to Italy..and Belgium..make you wonder if there paths crossed.
I am just watching the rest of BGT then off to bed....hope you all sleep well..nightxxxxxxxLove

Toni, we had a downpour here all afternoon but no thunder and lightening. The sun has been out for an hour but it's looking a little dark again now. Poor Daisycat. You might not be able to book any holidays at the moment but no harm in looking at what you want to do later.
That's one good thing about the rain Barbara, we don't have to water the garden. I'm hoping it has filled my pond up a bit. Was going to say I hope you enjoyed having your GC round but I know you will have. I wish lessons had been learned after the war but there are still wars going on today. I don't think some people will ever learn unfortunately. As I was watching the films of the war, I wondered if any of them were my relatives. I don't really know what part they played.
Elizabeth, hope you have had a good afternoon with Charlie and your son enjoyed the chocolate birthday cake. More noisy cars? Wish they would be quiet for you. Will you go away for the summer holidays? Guess you can't really complain about OH doing some housework. Men don't often do these things. Glad you enjoyed sitting in the garden though. I leave 1 bramble to grow in the garden and pick lots of fruit from it. Have to share it with the birds though.
Kath, from what I heard on tv, none of the vets really say much about their experiences in the war. They certainly do play down the part they played and don't think of themselves being heroes, although we all feel they are. Your dad had a part to play too even though he couldn't enlist. Someone had to stay behind to keep the country going for us.
Evening Joan. Isn't that typical, pouring down while you're our then stopping when you get home.
Mig, I think you might be right about the lime green. I didn't think of that.
Don't think the weather is going to be very good tomorrow so painting it is. Hope you all have a good day.Christine0 -
Hello everyone
looks like we got the worst of the thunder etc here as it was right over my head Fri night, loudest I've heard and buckets & buckets of rain. Ah well hope it saved others having it badly. Tiddles brought a mouse at 5am, despite the collar & bell (and another at 3 this morning) so obviously it'd take something the size of a cowbell to put a crimp in his 'activities'. Blah. Not the best couple of nights' sleep.
Hope Daisycat found a safe and quiet corner. Cuddles was curled up near the door earlier with the sun coming in, whistling & squeaking in her sleep & twitching her paws slightly. Obviously dreaming of something. A lot to be said for virtual cats.
Toni yes I do feel better for making my phone calls, and virtuoushave a letter to a cousin to tackle now but 1 'thing' feels much better than having a small list poking my conscience. Hope the curry was good, I was put off by 'school curry' and have never looked back so to speak.
TK do hope Charlie made it for the birthday and there wasn't a big hold-up with the trains. Hope it was a good day all round. Good luck looking around at properties. I hadn't thought whether the proposed Scottish devolution would affect prices in one direction or the other. Can see how it would be attractive under the circumstances & indeed under any, have never visited but it would be nice to.
Barbara I'm looking forward to hearing how your auctions goanything to do with e**y and I'm excited even if it's not mine.
Nothing up for me at the moment but a few things I'm working round to listing, and possibly buying.
I love your story about your Dad and the ice skates.I'm not sure if anyone has posted this somewhere already - but anyway, three cheers for Bernard Jordan.
Had quite a good day yesterday & got on well with some tidying & sorting, I bought some nice big lidded cardboard storage boxes to pack up some of the stuff in my 'dining' aka junk room. Looks much better, it's one thing having a lot of things but a lot of bitty & colourful stuff looks so much worse than if it's packed up & out of sight. Tireder today (of course  ) so just going to loaf about a bit now and regroup for the next job. Hope all are having a good Sunday, nobody here today so hope you are all ok just taking things easy. xx0 -
Hello Toady, Barbara, Mig, applerose, Joan, Elizabeth, how's your weather been today? It's been glorious here, wish I'd washed some bedding now.
Mig, I never thought of the Queen needing to be visible for all the veterans. Should have thought of it as my own one good eye is getting a bit dim - bit like me.
Elizabeth, my OH does most of the work around here. Cooks, cleans, does the washing, gardening - although he does let me go shopping with him.
BGT, I was hoping that Lucy, the opera singer would win. Although I liked Bars and Melodies, Jack Pack and Collabro. I even liked the older lady dancing - wish I had half her energy and mobility. It was a good contest this year.
Chat soon. xx"Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." Robert A Heinlein

Just had roast beef dinner, lovely plenty left for sandwiches .
Been glorious here as well, brought a mesh fly screen for the back door so the flies don't come in ,it's by J* L ,it's as easy to put up as they say ,it must be oh did it.
Just watching tennis which unfortunately is being spoilt by stupid commentary .Mig0 -
Afternoon all
I don't think my ABs have worked finish them now..I didn't like the idea of taking them not with all the news about super bugs...
Toady I am all excited for my Eb*y listing..not a lot of chance, one is a pair of riding boots..not mineand when I look on there are loads on but started them at 99p ..I do have a thing about boxes..we have a room with piles of stuff in them, but like you at least it tidier than having them everywhere..I have a dinning table and you can only sit at two chairs the others have stuff on them..so thats my next job..hope you are having a nice lazy day today
I did see Bernard yesterday good on him...
Kath I thought the little boys would have won, but then again Simon already has them on contract..so they say..I thought the magician was good ..and the old lady well I cant believe it  wish I had taken up dancing..
Mig..that is what we need a fly scree for the patio doors..I am sick of them coming in..think I will have one of your roast beef sandwichesnot eaten today... my fault
Christine hope you got some paining done..either that or you had the sun and got in the garden
Will put the kettle and put my feet up..2 GC just gone home and the baby may visit later...was sunny now raining...xxxxLove

Toady, we've had quite nice day here today but just had a downpour half an hour ago and it turned very dark. Looks as if it's past over now though. I did mean to invite everyone to my pool party last night. I noticed just after tea that I had one in the back garden which wasn't there yesterday morning but it's gone again. Sounds as if you've got deaf mice if Tiddles is still catching them. Storage boxes are a good thing, aren't they? Make things look much tidier.
Kath, I like to get my washing out too but I didn't have enough today to make it worthwhile putting the washer on. One of my neighbours told me the other day that he thought I should get myself married so I could retire. I quite like being on my own but maybe it would be worth it to get someone to do my housework.
Mig, roast beef dinner sounds lovely. I had chicken today. I could do with a mesh screen too. Must get one.
Barbara, yes I did get a bit of painting done. Just behind the chest of drawers and tv unit, which are on the same wall, and down the side of the drawers so I could get them put back in place. I had to empty them again so sorted everything out and tidied it. Had quite a few things to throw out. I'll do the rest another time. You think the ABs haven't worked? Are you going to see your GP again?
I'm watching Dirty Dancing. Great film.Christine0 -
Morning all
Christine I love dirty dancing and came across it last flicking through the channels..OH went and had a read not a fan..it was a flop when it was made then because a cult film..brilliant music
Glad you got some painting done..and sorting out it puts me to shame I will have to get organized.. no I wont go back to my GP...I will let it run its course..my son hasn't been near because its his op tomorrow...he doesn't want to jinx it..
we are having thunder storms here , it was lovely just after 5 now its black.. has you know I hate thunder and lightening... will put the kettle on ..and better clean up in case Toni pops in...will see you later.
Love

Hello Barbara and anyone else i missed.
i hope everyone's having a good day. i'm off to the physio this afternoon i only had the phone call this morning.
take care all
joan xxtake care
joan xx0 -
That was short notice joan, I hope it wasn't too inconvenient for you to get ready & arrange to get there. Hope it goes well.
hello barbara, applerose, mig & Kath - hope you & everyone are having a good day so far. Thunderstorms again in the early hours but actually rather nice now & quite hot. Going to have a cup of tea from barbara's tea 'kit' & ponder the best use of the afternoon. Hope you are feeling no worse barbara if the ABs haven't done their job, I can see that you wouldn't want any more if it can be helped. It's not just me with boxes of stuff then. I don't actually have a dining table & chairsbut if I did I daresay there would be things on them too.
Will risk hanging some washing out. Barbara have you had a chance to 'work' those sunglasses yet? They will be ideal for our coach trip. Seaside would be nice today.

Hello Joan, Barbara, Toady, Mig, applerose and anyone I might have forgotten.
Joan, I hope your physio appointment went well. Such short notice, couldn't do with that, I - well OH really, likes everything planned out in advance. Even trips to T***o or A**a are planned out like a military expedition.
Toady, trips to the seaside - lovely. I wear sunglasses outdoors all the time, regardless of the weather or the time of year. I have Sjogren's syndrome you see and I can't bear to feel any kind of weather passing over my very dry eyes. In spite of Hypromellose.
We've had thunder here again too. First was just one little clap whilst I was in the bathroom. OH blamed me - MOI what could he have thought I was doing...don't go there.
Barbara, thinking of you and your son tomorrow. I hope all goes well.
Applerose, I've always got enough washing to fill the machine. I don't know where it all comes from, after all there are no young people living here. Just me and OH.
This afternoon it took three quarters of an hour for us to get an internet connection. I rang the service status number and was contacted by someone in Indonesia (well it sounded like he was from Indonesia, they always do!). He asked some questions like 'are you receiving phone calls?' yes, 'can you make calls?' how did he think I'd contacted him? Thought transference? He'd asked my number so must have known I wasn't using a mobile. Anyway, after he'd asked umpteen questions, we managed to connect to the internet - typical!! Afternoon all
Well after all the rain its had gone very humid...
Toady I had a practice with the sunglasses in the 10 mins of sun we got...maybe next week... my pet hate is hanging washing out and bringing it in again..think we might have to head to the med with the coach
Joan that was short notice..honestly do they think we wait by the phone for appointments..hope it has gone well for you
Kath thankyou..sorry you suffer with your eyes has well, has though you haven't enough going on  I hate to ring up about the internet and feel awful keep saying sorry I didn't catch that..so I put OH on mind you he is going deaf so its fun and games..its so annoying when the net goes down..
the sun has come out think I might just rush out with my new glasses on..my son has to be there for 8.30 in the morning doesn't want anyone with him...so we will be ringing up...
Will see you all later...xxxxxLove
