Hello everyone,
Just been out for lunch with a friend, but glad to be back home. Too hot to eat much.
The first year I was on my own, I managed the garden myself. It's a very big mature garden but not too difficult. However, the following year I came across a lovely young man doing basic gardening maintenance, so he has been coming every two weeks since. Sometimes, it only needs the grass cutting, but other times he will do all the cutting back and heavier stuff, so it works well. He's been while I was out, and it's lovely to just sit and admire his handiwork.
I hope everyone is managing this heat. I can take any amount sitting sunbathing doing nowt, but not happy when it comes to moving about in it! Cate.x0 -
We haven't had any thunder. I'm always telling the children not to worry as lightening goes for the highest object but have seen a few burnt rooftops on the TV. Applerose you must have jumped a mile!
in fact I haven't seen a drop of rain for over a week either. The hollihocks have some deep purple flowers (thought it was labelled as a red one when I bought it). a spot of rain would be welcome, just a little mind you.
Lucy came home in tears from the first violin concert. Apparently she was holding a tissue at the start ! Then she dropped it onto the strings and it messed up her playing so she rushed off stage before the end! Another performance tonight so hope all goes well. I nearly said to her to make sure she was prepared at the start and tissues were tucked away.
Cate it sounds like you have a lovely garden. It is great that you have a regular gardener that you are happy with.Nice to read you have had luch out but I know what you mean about not being able to eat much in this heat. I think I've lost about half a stone (much needed I add).
I hope Lexi is now okay after her op. those hoods do get in the way!
I'm not a soap fan either Applerose. But I do enjoy masterchef!
I can sit in the sun and tan very easily. since being off mtx I no longer go all patchy. I like to sit out in the garden and lately we haven't had the loud music like before so I can sit and read. Mind you got to do another shirt for Lucy's concert and I hate ironing in this heat.
I have a king size bed but we disturb each other terribly. OH snores in the early part of the night so I can't hear the TV and I snore later and wake him up. Mind you he slept downstairs in the cool last night but Lucy took his spot, I think because she was worried it might thunder.
Okay off to check gas and electricity prices as our deal ran out a few months back but I always take my time looking around.

Hello Barbara, Joan, Christine, Elizabeth, Cate, how are you all on this hot afternoon? Not too bad I hope. :?
Barbara, I feel sorry for anyone who is afraid of thunder and lightning. It must be dreadful. I've always quite enjoyed them. As a 10+ year old my dad turned our then attic into a fantastic bedroom for me. There was a tiny dormer window which looked out over our roof. I'd open it wide and sit on the sill with my legs out on the roof, and watch the lightning flashing above the neighbouring houses. Although I'm not actually afraid of storms, I don't like them as much as I used to. Age I supposed. :?
Christine, I certainly felt like getting in the fridge. We have a stall on our local market that sells floaty dresses, but I'm too fat and stumpy to wear one. I think you must look fantastic in them though.
Joan, glad this hot weather is suiting you and Sue. But make sure you don't get heat stroke, and drink plenty of water. I hope Lexi soon recovers from her op. I bet the hood makes her hot though.
Cate, how lovely of the young man to tend your garden for you - hope that didn't sound too rude. Must get my mind out of the gutter.
Elizabeth, how upsetting for Lucy, I hope she has a more successful performance tonight. GOOD LUCK LUCY. I do like Corrie and Enders, but sometimes their storylines get silly. I'm not averse to watching an interesting documentary at times like that.
We are supposed to get a thunderstorm tonight and overnight, so we won't get much sleep.
Emily has put a couple of new blogs up, with photos of a couple of her outfits. Plus one of her best pal Alex who is her dressmaker/furniture restorer/general dogsbody. I don't know how she finds the time, as her husband has Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair. Alex is his full time carer, although she is a lot younger than he is. They have no children, which under the circumstances is probably quite wise.
Hope you all manage to get a reasonable night and that you all have a good weekend."Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." Robert A Heinlein

Hallo all!
Excuse me for not mentioning each of you in turn.. not very good at that so will just add my few words.
I did used to have a gardener at one time..at least I thought he was a proper gardener until I asked him to thin out the muscari and he dug out everything! I was absolutely dismayed at my wee border being totally decimated.. At that time I was still able to do a bit myself so I got a few plants put in okay but since then the council in all it's wisdom has a scheme called "Mow & Grow" although the grow bit seems to have evaded them and they just strim everything.. including any flowers down to the ground so all my borders have disappeared completely!.. and it's supposed to help those who are unable to do things for themselves.
Must confess I'm not very happy when the storms are around, I always imagine my TV is going to blow up or something just as dramatic. When there's high winds I'm sure my roof is going to blow off as I'm in a first floor flat it would leave me open to the elements and I have a phobia about the sky and moon. My family do call me a drama queen but it's not intentional.
As for soaps.. I have rather an addictive personality and used to watch each and every soap.. some on the weeks showing and then Brookside omnibus which got to ridiculous lengths so I now make it a rule not to watch anything like that. Some things I want to watch that are serialised I prefer to record as I don't then get so engrossed and hooked. IYKWIM!
Must just add that I do hope Lucy had a successful evening. All the world is mad except thee and me and even thee's a little odd!
Birthday - AUGUST 22nd0 -
Couldn't log in today-I must have had caps lock on or something!
Anyway just to say Lucy's concert went well. I was holding my breath on her return...Thank you for the good luck wishes Kath and Barbara. She only has her violin grade 2 to do next week and that is the really important one.
Charisse I hate this desire to hack everything back. My OH does it too and it has caused many upsets between us. I used to love gardening but can barely manage now, just a bit of pulling out the tall weeds, nothing low down and I feel guilty if I buy plants because somebody else has to plant them on my behalf.
Happily it poured down last night as we so needed it and saves a lot of effort doing it ourselves. The brief thunder and lightening storm scared Lucy but Dan was fine about it.
Wind definitely scares me Charisse as we have tall trees next to the house and I'm convinced they will fall on us. For some reason our neighbour has let a tall fir tree grow right outside her window so it blocks all the light for her. I can't understand why she didn't cut it back when it first started growing.
I'm following the Greek vote this weekend. I hope it doesn't end up as a Greek tragedy with riots and mass shortages of essentials.
Hoping to get a chance to sit in the garden but have visitors all day, most to get their bikes fixed by OH but also a friend is using our parking space before heading to a concert.
Also lost yet another friend this weekend, but do not know how she died and it is quite a unexpected shock. Another friend lost her Brother, he was so unwell he has had a difficult time with sanctions as not well enough to even get out of bed most days.
Sad times and another load of cuts next week....

Afternoon all a lovey day here sunny but cooler..
Hello Charisse its nice to have you in the cafe, and dont worry about naming everone that was down to mewe had a young lad do our garden many years ago now and he cut down my lovely forsythia. ?.sorry not a clue on the spelling..I do like corrie and emerdale..and brookside took me back..
Kath my mum was scared of thunderand lightening, I thought it was down to the bombings in the war, but apperently my gms house was hit by a fireball down the chimney it came and set fire to the settee  thats the story anyhow..I will go and look for Emilys blog I did try to lave a postion the last one but it wouldn't let me..what a lovely friend she has...some peple just get on with things it cant be easy for her
we have 2 gds here at the min..eldest has a weeks hols from work and the middle one is here till Sunday night...hope everones doing ok and Lucy did really well at the concertLove
Barbara0 -
Elizabeth.. That's great with Lucy's accomplishment and good luck to her on the next exams.
The M&W workmen don't just hack things back they completely destroy them.. there's not a smidgeon left of any plants now and when I complained to the council these people then almost destroyed one of my blueberry bushes by yanking the whole (enormous) pot out of the ground and pulled out the mint I was growing in a little pot..and that one 3 times! I go on and on when I start about them I'm afraid.. useless lot but as they say..beggars can't be choosers.
So sorry about your losing another friend .. very sad. ((Hugs))
I think as we get older it so reminds us of our own mortality doesn't it?
Waiting for Andy to play.. hope he wins this year!
GO ANDY!!All the world is mad except thee and me and even thee's a little odd!
Birthday - AUGUST 22nd0 -
Hi everyone, hope you managed to get some sleep last night - we didn't, well not much anyway. :?
Charrisse, glad to have you with us, but I'll have to apologise to you because I'm bound to spell your name wrong at some point. Andy win - he'd better.but I worry if he has to meet Federer at some point. Don't know why, but I've definitely taken a dislike to him. :?
Barbara, I used to work with a lady who wasn't scared of thunderstorms, but her mum was, and she used to go and sit with her while there was one rumbling away. When her mum died, the night of the funeral there was a huge storm, and this lady wanted to go and sit by her mum's grave but her husband would let her (why would he?) ever since then, she's been scared of thunder and lightning.
Elizabeth, I'm glad that Lucy's concert went well. Wishing her well for her violin grade 2. I'm afraid I used to be the garden hacker in the days when I could do it. I think OH is rather relieved I'm unable now.
Hope everyone is having a reasonably good weekend. Sore mouth is back, but I noticed that when I was taking Vitamin B complex instead of just folic acid, it wasn't as bad. An experiment worth repeating I think."Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." Robert A Heinlein

Yep stick with the vit B complex Kath if you have seen improvements. That is what I do and why I stopped taking humira. I've seen a big improvement with the lungs and breathing. self diagnosis works for me.
Its been such a lazy day yet I have tons of ironing and forms to fill for Lucy's new school. I just can't get myself motivated.
All the visitors have currently gone so I'll have an early night if I can.
Who remembers the advert where the Mother spends all day rushing about, housework ,cooking etc and when husband returns home she has just sat down and he says 'feet up again darling?' Think it was for Rolo's?

Hello everyone,
Charrisse, good to see you in the caff. Would you like tea or coffee? If you're feeling tired we have a lovely bed.....well, when I can get our Kath out of it! Just kidding, she worries me with all she does. Still, better than sitting under things.
Kath I love Emily's blog. She is a wonderful writer, so articulate. It takes me back to gentler times. I was a very young teenager in the late fifties, and she is bringing back a lot of memories. The sticky out skirts with layers and layers of net underneath. I had one with hoops in, and when I sat down on the bus, it shot up in the air! Oh happy days.....Dreamboats and Petticoats days.
Elizabeth well done to lovely Lucy. You must be so proud. When my youngest was about eight he came home from school one day with a violin, and a disgusted look on his face. He really didn't want to know, but you know what, he turned out to be amazing, and got all the grades very quickly. His tutor said "he makes that instrument sing". Made no difference though, the minute he could he stopped playing, but started with the guitar. Now he has eight different guitars and makes them sing. I had a recording of him playing Cavatina, the theme from the Deerhunter at his dad's funeral.
Barbara like you, I'm not keen on thunder and lightening. I remember my dad used to make us turn everything off. Do people still do that?
If no one is using the bed, I'll have a little rest. My shoulders are bad again, and combined with the heat, it makes me tired. The annoying thing is though, that when it's time for bed, I'm wide awake.
Love to Christine, Toni, Toady, Joan and Sue, and anyone I've missed.....Cate.x0 -
Just watching Andy play, the tennis has been brillint this year..anyhow thought I would look in the cafe while watching it...
ooh Andy has got his trainer coming on
Cate I still turns things off when its thundering..I know it can cause a surge in electric..dont want mi new telky blowing up
Elizabth sorry I must have posted at the same time earlier..so glad to hear that Lucy did well..hope..I rember an advert were the good women puts his dinner on the table and she sits down without any...so sorry to hear about your friend..
Kath you sat with your legs out the window and it was thundering..tell you I have been under the stairs befor now, my sons dont mind it si I must have put on a goid act when they were young
Charisse enjoy the tennis its certainly livened up
right im off to watch more...Love
Barbara0 -
Oh my goodness. I didn't get in last night and now there are lots of posts. Sorry if I don't mention everything. I've had a read though though.
Barbara, I used to play tennis at school and with my friend in the local park but haven't watched it since then. I turned everything off during the storm we had then noticed my next door neighbour outside a couple of hours later and asked if their electricity was off. She said it had been for 10 minutes but they just switched the trip switch on again and it was back. Silly me. Why didn't I think of that.
So who's in the bed tonight. Is that you Cate? Hope your shoulders ease off soon. I'm often wide awake when I go to bed after feeling as if I could fall asleep standing up.
Elizabeth, can you maybe delegate at least some of the ironing? Get everyone to iron their own? Maybe fill a couple of lines of the form in every now and again? It is sometimes hard to get going, especially when you've got the kids to see to. Glad Lucy's concert went well. Hope her violin grade goes well too. Sorry to hear you've lost another friend.
Kath, that is a sad story about the lady's mum. I can imagine she felt her mum was on her own during the storm. Hope you sort out the Vit B and folic acid to heal your mouth again. I don't look so good in a floaty dress as I have a huge tummy so I look as if I'm about to give birth.I must go and have a look at Emily's updated blog.
Hi Charrisse. Nice to see you in the cafe. Don't worry about mentioning everyone's name. We don't always to it. How awful of the gardener destroying your plants like that. I'd be livid.
Joan, I hope little Lexi is doing ok after her op.
What a lot of noise round here lately. I leave my bedroom window open at night but I've heard neighbours come home at 2 in the morning and people walking past chatting loudly in the early hours, birds singing from 3 and people going to work from 6. Tonight, there is loud music, mainly drums, coming from somewhere nearby and fireworks going off. Think I need earplugs.Christine0 -
Hello Elizabeth Kathleen Christine Cate Barbara Charrisse and anyone else I missed.
Elizabeth good luck with Lucy's violin test. I hope it goes well.
Kathleen I bet that was lovely sitting with your legs out side.
Christine I hope you've had a good weekend.
Cate i'm sorry about your shoulder's I hope the pain goes as quick as it came.
Barbara I hope you had a good weekend. my I have not got my ap for my ankle yet I cannot put any weight on my foot.

joan xxtake care
joan xx0 -
Wow, that bed is comfy! Only just woke up.
Right, a bacon and egg buttie and a builders for moi.
Joan I hope Lexi is OK tomorrow, if she has to have surgery. She sounds happy enough, so all should be well.
I'm looking forward to the final part of Black Work tonight. It's rare there's anything much I enjoy on telly these days, but this is an exception. I have to say though I also love The Syndicate too. Kay Mellor writes good stuff, and great acting from Lenny - sorry, Sir Lenny - Henry and Anthony Andrews.
OK, I've changed the bed ready for whoever needs it next, and put a fan next to it. It got rather hot..... Cate.x0 -
Hello everyone,
Sitting here waiting for the rain they said we'd have this afternoon/evening. Bet we don't get any.
Cate, I'm glad you had a good sleep on that bed, it is comfy isn't it. Not watching Black Work, even though we usually watch most of Sheridan Smith's work. But the Syndicate - WOW! Love sir Lenny in it, and Anthony Andrews and Melanie Hill. Yes, Kay Mellor is a brilliant playwrite.
Joan, it was lovely sitting with my legs out - wouldn't do it now thought. I hope Lexi's op goes well tomorrow. As long as she's happy and can play with her dumbell - bless her.
Christine, Emily's blog is so good, she's started me off on one as well: http://lifegardensandotherstuff.blogspot.co.uk/ Mine's a bit boring though. Sorry you are having to put up with all that noise. I expect you're like me, and was brought up to be quiet at night when people were in bed. It doesn't seem to be the case any more.
Barbara, I know lots of people who end up under the stairs in a thunderstorm. Good job I don't need to, there's no room.
So Princess Charlotte has been christened today. Haven't seen any news yet, but I like to see what outfits the queen wears to these events. I'm sure she's lost a bit of weight. Must ask what her secret is next time I'm invited up to the palace. Her Majesty has arthritis too, not sure what type though, but those meeting her are advised to be gentle when shaking her hand - know how she feels.
Well, it's gone quite dull now, so maybe they were right about the rain after all. Take care everyone. xx"Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." Robert A Heinlein

Evening all didnt get on this morning with have 2 gds here..they have gone home now, it was a lovely day then early afternoon then the heavens opened and caught a lot of pepole out..and there was a fair on nearby it was awfull to see it all set up then rained off
Joan I hope Lexie will be ok, sorry you cant put your weght on that ankle..you have had a few ops now hope this one goes well for you...
Christine I did laugh at the electric off that is somthing I would do...glad it came back on for you..I call the hot weather silly season, because you get allsorts going on..one man that lives on the estate across the feilds from us..was arrested for hitting his girlfriend ..and the neighbour that tried to help
Cate I have missed the black works and intended watching it, I heard it has been briilliant...hope you got in your garden today..ans helped yourself to the bacon butty, I had one earlier with cheese it goes so well together
Kath glad you missed the storm,I will go and look for your blog..hopefully I wont end up under the stairs later it has gone black again..
We took our gd home then a bit of shopping then the heavens opened...so been in since. ...just had a jacket potatoes with cheese beans and bacon...by the way has anyone seen mig around..Love
Barbara0 -
Joan, I hope everything goes well for Lexi tomorrow. Hope you get your app soon for your ankle.
Cate, I have set the tv to record both Black Work and Humans. I'm enjoying both but they are on at the same time so I watch one now and the other tomorrow. The Syndicate's been good too. There's supposed to be 2 twists in the final part. I think whoever is in the bed next will appreciate the fan.
Kath, I spent the afternoon scorching in the garden then decided to take a video of it. Just as I finished, the heavens opened. Been dull and raining since. I'll read your blog when I post this or I'll end up losing it. Be sure to let us know what the queen says when you're next there for tea.
Barbara, hope you had a lovely day with your GC. It's such a shame when it rains when there's a fair on. Spoils the day. It can be funny when the electricity goes off. I keep thinking I'll go upstairs to watch tv or switch a lamp on when the light won't go on.Oh my goodness. I hope the girl who was hit by her boyfriend is ok. And the neighbour.
Had a quick chat with my son this morning. My GD is going to Paris tonight with the school. Just hoping things are ok at Calais and they get there ok. My son reckons things have calmed down now. Skyped my daughter and GC then spent the afternoon in the garden tidying up till it got dark then poured down. Spent the evening sorting some more photos in to albums. Just get one done then find a couple of photos which need to go in the middle so have to move the rest down to fit them in.
Don't think Mig's been in for a while. Hope she's ok. I'll leave the kettle on for any late comers.Christine0 -
Sorry I've been awol for a couple of days ,i had the door frame in the bathroom to gloss paint and decided to paint the inside of the door as well it took two coats of undercoat to cover the door and then gloss it ,so i did the thing we all know we shouldn't carried on when i knew i should have stopped so all achey and then yesterday went out for a drive with middle son .
It was bright sunshine when i got up with clear blue skies now its cloudy with a bit of a breeze. Mig0 -
Hello everyone, thought about going into hiding from those who might have braved my blog and found it boring. But no, you are all too nice to be rotten to me.
mig, I hope you've recovered from your painting marathon.
Christine, the Queen and I don't speak much when I go to tea. We're both too polite to talk with our mouths full.
Barbara, I hope you didn't end up under the stairs again. Fancy that man hitting his girlfriend AND the neighbour too.
Joan, I don't know what time Lexi is having her op, but I hope all goes well. :?
Hope Elizabeth, Cate and Toni are all well."Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." Robert A Heinlein

Evening All! Had a rather bad couple of days with the old bones I'm afraid! Does get me down. I have two types of pain.. one is "like" sciatica which makes my left leg very numb and sometimes I tend to drag my foot.. but the other, which is much harder to bear, is in my groins and prevents me from standing up so even getting to the little room as a nightmare.. :?
Well.. that's enough of a moan for now methinks.
Kathleen.. Loved looking through your blog..lovely pictures and lovely family too.
Love watching the queen and although I know she doesn't dress herself the clothes she wears are so gorgeous.. and the colours too.
I agree with the comments about Lenny Henry's part in The Syndicate..so well acted.
Another warm day here.. went out to lunch.. nothing fancy but it does ring the changes and gets me out of these four walls for a wee while.
Andy through to the next round.. Yay!
Hope you all had a good day.All the world is mad except thee and me and even thee's a little odd!
Birthday - AUGUST 22nd0 -
Glad you're ok Mig. At least the painting is out of the way now. Hope the acheyness is easing off.
Kath, just read through your blog. It is very well done and interesting with some lovely pictures.
Barbara, I was talking to someone the other day about school trips. We used to go to a local museum and park for the day and we'd take a picnic. Now they go abroad. I've heard of some trips costing around £1000. Cooler here today too with some rain and lots of clouds.
Charrisse, sounds as if you're having a bit of a bad time. Hope it eases off soon. Moan away. We're all here to listen and support. I love going out for lunch but don't get to very often.
I got stabbed in the eye by an iris leaf yesterday. It really hurt but eased of after half an hour but my eye's bothering me a bit now. And I've got toothache. If it doesn't go away in a few days, guess I'll need a trip to the dentist. Not looking forward to it as it's a tooth which supports a bridge.Work was easy today. The family are on holiday so didn't have to worry about bothering anyone. Decided to watch Gardeners World which I'd recorded and had to put my PIN in as some of it wasn't suitable to watch before 9pm. Hope the flowers aren't swearing.
Christine0 -
Hi all, just a passing visit to say I still keeping my eye on you all. Bloods tomorrow & rheumy to follow sometime, so just working my way round to them things, not much else.
Have spent the last week or two like most of us I expect, being either hot or slightly cold (today the temp dropped well down) and about 5 minutes that were just right. I think Cate said why do we get such daft weather. Never been sure where in the world would be just right especially as hot = insects & whatnot. And as Barbara said, it does make people go a bit mad dogs & englishmen. At least there seems to be no shortage of ice-cream in the cafe fridge
Anyway hope those we don't like it have coped with it. The thundery weather was certainly dramatic here, some fantastic lightning, I don't mind it but not right overhead for preference. Especially as Charrisse mentioned, there's the thought that something may 'come down', which being the pessimist's pessimist, I always expect the worst.
At least the garden is self-watering at the moment which is handy. Wondering what on earth they will be doing on Gardener's World that's NSFW, applerose? Can't begin to think. Will be going to look at Kath's blog after this.
Sorry to hear TK has lost a friend.Seem to have plenty on your plate as usual with visitors, forms to fill in etc. And shopping around for your energy suppliers etc, I don't have the energy and I don't have anywhere near the other demands on your time so well done. Glad Lucy's concert went well 2nd time, extra hard to come back from a tricky start, my nerve would have gone. Good for her. Whenever I hear mention of Masterchef my first thought is.. 'buttery biscuit base'. If you don't know what I'm on about, google at your peril.
I feel flustered even watching someone cook under pressure like that. Hot & stressful, no thank you!
Hello to joan, poor Lexi, isn't she good to not mind the vet and having to have the collar. My cat had to have one once and even though she didn't mind too much I was so happy when I could take it off for her.
Love to all & see you soon xx0 -
Morning all, sorry if I keep you waiting for breakfast..hope you help yourself...not good is it...
Christine ..my gds have not been on any ...the middle one 14..wants to go to Paris disney land so I think we will all have to chuck in for that...your poor eye, I have done this a few times now...so I am extra careful now..the garden stakes are bad if you catch themglad you had an easy day at work...gardeners world not suitable... : :? Honestly
Charisse I feel for you with the sciatic pain, I havehad a few injections but the things that help is the pregabalin...wounder if you have hip probs with the pain in your groin... glad yougot outfor lunch..it does make such a diffrence...
Toady..its always good to hear from you..good luck with bloods tomorow..and hope the rhumy comes through soon...yes the weather us so up and down something in the middle is good..pouring down here again so no need to water the garden..now I am off to google buttery bisuit base...Love
