MRI scan information

Options
I was very pleasantly surprised to receive a call this morning for my MRI scan for next Saturday 04/07.
Apart from having to wear a mask and go alone I am clueless as to what to expect.
Do I have to remove jewellery?
How long will it take and how long to get results?
Any information would be much appreciated, thank you.

    Hi Twirl58

Thank you for posting on the forum. I am glad to hear that you have an appointment for your MRI scan for next Saturday. Mike1’s link to the NHS website regarding MRI scans contains a lot of information about what happens before and during an MRI. As the scanner produces strong magnetic fields it is important to remove any metal objects from the body including watches and jewellery. There is a full list on the link.

As the MRI scan needs to be studied by a radiologist and possibly other specialists this usually means it will take a week or two for the results, unless they are needed urgently. Again, there is more information on the link from Mike1. You could also speak to the hospital where the scan is to take place for any advice and about how long it will be before the results are available.

You are very welcome to call us on our freephone helpline: 0800 5200 520 so you can talk things through with one of our helpline team. If you repost on the ‘living with arthritis forum’, others may respond with their own experiences.

    I hope this is helpful

    Best wishes
