Cortisone and Water Retention

I have just (5 days ago) had the first cortisone injection in my hip. The first thing I noticed is that all of my swelling (oedema) has gone from all other area's in my body. The relief, not just from my hip but the other arthritic joints such as my feet, wrists, fingers due to the reduction in water has been so relieving to say the least. Has anyone else experienced this as everything I read states that the opposite should occur in that water retention could be a problem.

Hello @Bentley and welcome to the Online Community. We are a friendly and supportive group and I hope that will be your experience as well.

I've put some information on steroids below but hopefully others will let you know what their experiences are.

    and from the NHS

If it is giving you relief in other parts of your body that is great and an added bonus - I hope it continues.

    Best wishes

    Peter

Thank you. I had read that normally you have water retention, so was surprised to find the opposite. It has been so liberating to have lost the excessive build up of fluid allowing more freedom of movement.

I found exactly the same with the hip steroid injection that I had 3 weeks ago . All my oedema has gone so a lot of my joints feel a better. I started Methotrexate at the same time but have had to stop for a couple of weeks as had some side effects. Just starting on my inflammatory arthritis journey , calling it this because I haven’t been given a definite RA diagnosis. Finding it all v overwhelming. Glad that your steroid injection has helped you with the oedema.
