i am writing this for my 72 year old mom that is in severe pain in all her joints and struggles to get round the house.my mom knows there is no cure but just wants to find a painkiller that can just take the edge off the pain so she can get around more. she suffers with the side effects of stomach /sickness pains and nausea if they are to strong so is unable to take the correct doses.she says she noticed a difference when she was alllowed the anti inflamittry arthratec but her gp has taken her off them for other side effects,is there any other anti inflammatry with less side effects,or what have people found as easy on the stomache painkillers-any replies would be gratefull.thanks

It must be hard for you to see your mum in pain and seemingly not able to take anything to help.
I have taken many different anti-inflammatories, but I have always needed to take pain-killers at the same time, as they do different jobs.
There are lots available, but do different jobs, but as always they have their own individual side effects and contra-indications (trouble with mixing with other meds) so i would urge you to get your mum (maybe with yourself as well) to see the GP and ask for something to help.
hope you find something between you that can help your mum.0 -

Sorry if people get sick of me saying this but what about good old paracetamol? I find it a really effective painkiller especially when allowed to build up in your system. During a bad patch I take it every six hours so I have it thoughout the night, if I need it. I know it's not an anti-inflammatory but it does deal with pain very effectively.
I do also agree with the others that your Ma needs to see her GP again because she can't go on suffering as she is now.

Hi I've found Tramadol are easy on the stomach and Solpadol too. Loads of people I know don't like Solpadol as they make you feel kind of mellow. Me I like them for exactly that reason! 8)0

Hi Tutz, I am in a simular position to your mum and have suffered many tummy problems due to pain killers and other medication. I have tried all sorts of pain killers over the years and have settled with paracetamol as they give me no tummy problems, but they do need to be the right ones. I find the tablets do give me some tummu problems but capsuls give me none. Hi doses can leave you feeling a little wiped out but its worth a go. I take 2x500mg caps 4 times a day when pain is unbarable and if just taking them to keep the pain down one when needed. If it does not stop the pain it will take the edge off it and make it easyer to sleep or take your mind off it. 2x500mg is 1gram and this is the max dose you can take at any one time so keep an eye on her. However in saying all this it would be a good for her to see the doctor and perhaps be with her
Any changes in medication should be discussed with Rheumy or GP
but it worth a try and easy on the tummy and bowel. I hope you mum is feeling better soon

thanks or the replies,i will get her to go back to her gp and ask to be reffered to a pain clinic,as she sems to be going round in circles with the doctor, trying tablets thats shes tried before.
shes been told she needs knee replacements which have made her ankles go out of line (ankles being the most painfull)but the knee is the route cause, she just plucked up the courage to have her knee done as she was concerned that her other painfull joints wouldnt cope conpensating after a op then only to be told if the knees the least painfull we will concentrate on the ankle-again decided on going for the op then to be told ankle joint is too swollen an ops to risky of infection due to it not healing.
now she is an waiting appointment for shoes and insoles, but she has been down this road before, and understandably she complains of the pain that insoles are trying to correct joints that have been out of line for years and creates more pain in other areas then!
i will mention any suggestions to her-medicines she may not have tried untill we can sort something out. thanx
