Hi i am joining a local yoga class tomorrow, anyone else do yoga?
never been before but read somewhere its good for people with arthur.
i havent told the yoga teacher that i have RA yet but guess i should before i start incase she expects us to do hand stands or something. getting abit worried about going now dont know what to expect.
any yoga experts out there?

    Not an expert and have not done any for years although some of my stretching exercises I do now are yoga based.

    Enjoy your class. Do have words with her at the beginning and if she is a teacher worth returning to, she will keep an eye on you, in the nicest possible sense, and will be aware of what you should and should not try to do and give you alternatives instead.

    HI I did a couple of yoga classes a few years ago and really enjoyed it, only stopped as the teacher left and the class stopped. Do tell your teacher, I'm sure you'll be fine, and if the teacher knows whats hard for you and what is difficult or impossible they adapt the positions to suit you. I found that some of the Yoga exercises are the same as the physio has taught me.

    Hi I have been going to Yoga for a long time although I am no expert. The advice I would give you is to speak to your Yoga teacher before the lesson starts so that she is aware of your joint problems. She or he will then give you alternative moves or positions to attempt if you can't do the proper position. Everybody has different body problems whether they have arthritis or not so some people can do positions well and some can't . I have had OA in a lot of joints for a number of years and still enjoy my yoga because it certainly helps your muscles. I had a full hip replacement in January this year and have been back at my yoga class. I had to take a wee folding stool with me to lean on to get up of the floor and also a garden foam kneeling mat is a must if you have sore knees. The secret is that you don't do any moves that hurt you. My yoga teacher tells us that we know our own body and what we are capable of doing so just do what you are comfortable doing yourself. Don't compare yourself to all the experts in your class just enjoy what you can do for yourself to help loosen and stretch your own sore joints as I do.

    I love yoga and have been doing it on and off for a few years now. There are different levels of yoga and if you tell the teacher you have arthur before hand, s/he should suggest alternative moves to you all if you do the really hard stuff.

    I do mine on the Wii Fit :-) It's great fun, until I fall over when I'm feeling wobbly some mornings. But if I'm sensible, the mornings I'm not feeling too good, I pick the easier exercises.

    Yoga is a very good, gentle exercise for people of all abilities and strengths. I strongly recommend it

    Good luck I think you'll love it. Just get yourself near a wall incase yoiu can't get back off the floor and do tell the instructor. If you are like me you might be one of the youngest and it might look odd when you get trapped on the floor!! :wink:

    I do yoga but with a video. I have got Raquel Welch mind and body video ( an ancient video) and I love it esp the relaxation part. I am usually off as soon as I hear the music.

    Thank you for all your replies.
    Well when i got to class i told the teacher i have RA, (She ask us no questions about health) she said to me "you are very young"
    i said "yes thank you"
    she replied"why do you have it then?"
    I replied "you tell me"
    anyway done the class but couldnt do all the moves so didnt, but she didnt surgest any alternatives for me.
    didnt like her :(
    am going to try to find another class somewhere else as think i will like yoga :D
    A man passed wind in the class so this made me laugh was worth going just for that :oops: :D:D

    I totally agree. Find another class. There are yoga teachers and yoga teachers and she was not a good one! Pleased that you had her sussed out quick enough and wish you well in finding another class to attend.

    Glad you got a laugh at the class :lol::lol::lol: so all was not lost :lol::lol::lol: and you now know that you will enjoy yoga when you find a suitable teacher.
