Hi everyone, well so far so good, the ops not been cancelled this time! Im nearly packed, off out tonight for my sisters birthday, but back home early :( My nerves are holding up quite well, Im surprising myself, though tomorrow I dont know how I will be!

My question to all hip/knee replacement veterans :D is that my mums friend has just had a THR 2 weeks ago, shes 62 and also partially sighted, when my mum went to visit her yesterday, she had been out down the local community centre for 2 hours, less than 2 weeks after her op. Is this a record? Im imagining being housebound for a bit longer than that! jk

    Hi jk
I was out having short walks at 2 weeks but didn`t venture anywhere that I wasn`t sure of chair heights etc. Maybe she has a raised chair there already?? Don`t feel pressured to match her though, do what feels right for you, and listen to your body.
I had uncemented hip put in and they take a bit longer to settle than a cemented one, and I didn`t want to risk it after all the waiting to get it!!
Good luck and (((((hugs))))) for tomorrow.

    Hi JK
Just want to wish you all the very best for your op :)
As nearly said you are you and only you will know what is best for you. Some people take 6-8 weeks to recover so don't feel pressured!
    Will think of you tomorrow

Hi, good luck for tomorrow. I had mine done 10 weeks ago and apart from physio was not out till about five weeks. I know of older people who got it done around the same time and they were out a lot quicker than me so everyone is different

I think I had my first trip out after about three weeks and I'd had both my knees replaced at the same time..... but take you're time different people heal in different ways. My sister had a foot operation and didn't rest it, as told, or keep it elevated and she still gets pain and swelling two years down the line - maybe that's just her I don't know. :?

Hope all goes well and let us know how you go on,

    Hi jk,
Good luck for tomorrow. Remember it's not half as bad as you are thinking , pain relief is excellent and you will be back on your own bed before you know it. As others have said it's not a competition. I was relatively fit before surgery except for dodgy hip so muscles etc were ok.sadly I also have a low boredom threshold, never had to learn patience so I needed to get out after 13 days. Borrowed a wheelchair and went for picnic and retail therapy in Southport because it's flat and disability friendly. O/h did all the work but we had fun, including glass wine outside pub for me as he had to drive for once. The afternoon did us both good. The following day I did nothing,
    Take care

Lots of luck for tomorrow - it's nervewracking but will be all over before you know it. Pain relief in hospital was brilliant, I found. Also found I couldn't concentrate very well on books - though I read two, I had no idea what they were about straight after!

I had my THR op 4 weeks ago today, and was out of hospital on the Sunday able to walk with crutches, cope with stairs etc. My first full day home was my birthday(56th), and I really wanted to go out for a walk but was far too exhausted, so just lay around eating cake instead!

But I did go out the next day. I am lucky enough to live very near the sea and went to the seafront (about 200 metres away) with OH carrying a cushion, and we sat on a bench on the Prom for 20 minutes before venturing back. It took about ten times as long as usual to walk there, and even longer back.

I had done exercises and been to the gym for a few months beforehand, so think my muscles were in quite good nick. As others have said, we are all different, and recover at different rates, so it is best to listen to your body - it will let you know when you are ready to do more, and will definitely let you know when you have overdone it. It's just that you need to guage what you can do and don't do more than that, especially at first. But with the words of health professionals ringing in your ears about the hip precautions, and probably walking quite gingerly at first as you don't know how your new hip will react, you will find that caution comes more easily than you think.

I hope your stay in hospital is a positive experience and wish you a quick and easy recovery. You can look forward to less pain in the future, even if in the short term there's bruising and stitches.
