lightweight portable chair?

Hi,
Well, picnic season is upon us, my first since getting RA. We have been invited to lots of 1yr old's birthday picnics. . . just a little problem, I can't sit on the floor! For a start I can't get up and down without assistance, and even if somebody has helped me to the floor, I can't find a comfy position. Can't straighten or cross my legs, can't put weight on my wrists or elbows.
I thought of buying a portable chair. Does anyone have any suggestions? It needs to be really light and portable because I will be pushing a buggy at the same time as carrying it, and will be relying on public transport to get about.
Thanks in advance.
Emma x

    Hi Emma,

We are having sun then this year? Oh I hope!! I got a light weight chair with arms from one of those no UK supermarkets in their odds and sods isle and they are not too bad. I need the arms to get up and they are fairly light weight and a bit higher than the normal deckchair type thing. I use it when I remember to put it in the car for the sales and it is really light and small folded down. Hope you find something, Take care Cris

    Hi Emma,
I have a aluminum walking stick type thing that has three legs, two fold out to make up three legs with a small seat on it, you need to sit facing the stick, its about as small as you could use without going to a shooting stick type seat, certainly not for those who have a larger derriere! Not that I'm suggesting.....oh dear big hole opening up..... aahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I've used a shooting stick for years. Lightweight and also can be used as a walking stick for support. It takes practice to perch on one of these as it only has one leg and so can rock.
Whatever you use enjoy yourself and try not to fall off. n045.gif

    Hi Emma,

I have a lightweight canvas directors chair ('cos I'm bossy  ) which is folded and kept in the boot of the car. I use wooden park benches if they're available - that saves my hubby having to carry my chair and if I'm in someone else back garden I ask for one of their kitchen chairs and at all costs I avoid the plastic garden chairs as I've watched You've Been Framed far too often.

Hi, Anyone sat on a canvas chair and heard the sound of tearing material and found themselves sitting in a metal frame. This very DANGEROUS accident happened to me - much to the amusment of my dear husband, who had trouble getting me out, for laughing! :lol: Love Sue

    Hi
Before my op I took a fold up camping type chair, which has a carrying handle, and arms. However, as my hip got worse, I relied on the arm rests more to get up and unfortunately they tore!! They are quite low down though, and now I wouldn`t even try to use one now!!
I did see a fold up `perching stool`in Aldi for about £12 and plan to go to get one as we have a big family picnic soon and I ain`t getting down on the grass for no one!! It would be entertaining for onlookers but very embarassing for me (and my hubby!!) The fold up stool will be good for taking out and about watching my son play footy, as the one supplied by OT is really difficult to fit in the car boot.

    Hi Emma
I have the same problem but its not to bad for me i go most places in the wheelchair or on my scooter. but i do have a couple of fold up chairs and a shooting stick that you can sit on. Have a look at the following on ebay just type the numbers into the search.
320369856168 you can carry this on the pram or pushchair but its not heavy unless its a long waly

    360155337510 and 270391721736
Both very light and easy to carry but both require you to put a little weight on your legs
    Take Care

Thanks for this thread all and thanks Colin I shall certainly be having a look - my hubby 'makes' me go to classic car shows and they are a bit much sometimes and you just want to SIT for a second!
Thanks really useful. I had been looking on 'proper' sites for the walking stick ones, but so expensive!!

Thanks a lot everyone, and thanks to Colin for being so thoughtful. I like the look of the first one, exactly the sort of thing I'd like. I have found one at Argos for a similar price - it has good reviews.
I ususally use my forearm to help get me up if nobody can help, but don't make a habit of using my arms because it is quite painful. Ususally somebody can help.
Since it would be likely used for fairly long periods, and I may need to feed my little monster in it, something with a back would be best for me.
The picnic I was due to go to today has been cancelled due to the weather, so we'll he in a hall with chairs today.
    Thanks again.

Just a quick note on shopping on ebay. There are many bargains to be had, shop around the sellers.

    1. Always add the price to the postage to get the total price as some postage costs are excessive.

    2. Always pay using Paypal which is free to register/use and is the best method.

One type that I wouldn't recommend is the sort that my sister has. Those that look like a chair with handles and even a glass holder! They fold up into something like a thick fishing rod. I've been out with her and used them and 1) they are not very comfortable and 2) they are VERY heavy to carry. If anyone thinks they look easy to carry which they are but the problem is the weight. :)

Hope we get some nice weather to use the outside chairs, even if its only in the garden! :D Love Sue

This one is a walking stick sort of and then you open it out and theres a seat with the 'handle' being your backrest.
Sue - we will get some good weather I promise!!!!!!
