Terrible Night

I've only just been diagnosed with OA of hip 2 weeks ago and it has come on very suddenly as I only had vague aches and pains over the years.
I bought myself a memory foam knee pillow yesterday, had a hot bath and took a tamazepam and was looking forward to a good nights sleep. Wrong!! Woke up at around 3am with terrible pain all down my leg and slept fitfully after that. Had to get up at 6am. It took about an hour for the pain to go away and normally I don't get any at all during the day.
Anyway, back to the Doctors this week to tell him the tablets aren't really helping.

Hi There
Sorry you had such a rotten night. Tamazepan is only a sleeping pill and so wont help with the pain which is what is disturbing you. Ask your GP for some painkillers or take some anti inflamatory over the counter ones such as ibuprophen (Check it is not contraindicated if you are taking any other meds or have a bad stomach)
Also have you tried putting a pillow betweeen your knees when you lie down, it just supports your leg better.
Take care love Gillx0 -
Hi, Doctor has prescribed Naproxen which I have been taking for 2 weeks but don't seem to be doing any good. As I said I have bought a knee pillow, but it fits just above the knees. First night I have used it as I was just using an ordinary pillow before.0

Hi,
There are so many types of pain relief out there so it can be a bit of trail and error to find what works for you. See what the doctor can do for you and have you been referred anywhere?
I hope tonight will be better for you, there are few things more annoying than not sleeping much and being in pain as when you can't sleep it seems to hurt more. I also hope it hasn't set you up to hurt all day? Take care, Cris0 -

Hi cruisedolly
Sorry to hear about your fitful night. I can sympathise. I get them too . Drop off to sleep for about one hour and then wham! Painorama big time - don't know what to do with yourself. Everything seems worse at night as well, doesn't it? We should be asleep!!!!!!  Everyone else and their dog are, or so we think!
I find that a heated up wheat bag works the best for me. I wrap it around my offending knee or hip or wherever the pain is.
Good idea going back to your gp for a chat.
Hope you sleep better tonight,
Luv

Hello
I have OA in quite a few places and I take co-codamol 30/500 and amatrypaline at night. That seems to calm it down quite a bit, but sometimes nothing seems to work.
Its horrible, not being able to sleep, isn't it? I had a bad night last night, with lots of pain in my hands and back and I usually sleep well. I blamed the weather, as its cold and damp here.
It may be a good idea for you to see your GP again and talk about the pain isssues. As others have said, tamazapam is not a pain-killer and there may be something better for you out their. Prescription drugs or medication advised by your GP or Rhummy is the best bet as they know your condition and general health. Also, it may take a while to find the best treatment for you, as we all react differently to medication, what works for me may do nothing for you.
Sorry to go on, I hope you soon find some good pain relief.

Hi
Sorry you're having a bad time. I have OA and mine came on very quickly as well after I broke my ankle last year. It took quite a long time to find the right combination of meds. I went backwards and forwards to my dr, who I have to say was fantastic, until we got it right I do still have bad nights specially this week which I've put down to the damp weather, it may be an old wives tale but it does really get into your bones.
What's right for me may be wrong for you so I think it's a matter of trial and error until you get the right combination of meds. I also think a good night's sleep is half the battle at winning the war against arthur.
Good luck.

Finding the right combination of drugs is a bit of trial and error!
I thought we had it sorted but for the last few nights have hardly slept !
The pillow sounds like a good idea - thanks !
Hope you get some pain relief sorted that will help0 -
Thanks for all your replies. I've also ordered an orthopedic memory foam mattress. Problem is I'm keeping my hubby awake as well -may have to get single beds, lol0
-
I agree about the memory foam mattress. I was lucky enough to pick one up off of ebay for £150, it was practically new and came with a 4 poster pine bed.
It took a bit of time to get used to but I have to say I sleep a lot better now, except the last few nights, than I have for ages.

We've got a memory foam mattress topper and its made quite a difference, I love it! I'd buy the mattress but, its only a short time ago the bed was new, and it feels a bit extravigant to buy another one so soon. :? Still, I know what I want when I feel a bit more flush! Hope you enjoy yours. Love SUe0

Been back to Doctors and he has now given me co-codomal to see how they work. Hip and leg pain is only at night, but I am now getting ankle pain in the daytime which hurts when I walk. Got to try these for 2 weeks and see how I go.0
-
Hi, Hope the co-codomol help you. I take them and they do help quite a bit, but make me a bit sleepy if I take 2 together so I only do that at night or if the pain is really bad. They are quite constipating!!! Hope you get some sleep tonight. Love Sue0

Has anyone experienced increased pain in all affected areas after taking their MTX injection or tablet. I do my injection every Tuesday afternoon.
I seem to have about 24 hours afterwards where every bit of me is screaming with pain. I have a restless night with having to go to the loo more often.
When I asked my Rheumy nurse about it, it's a reply that. It affects everyone differently.
I must admit, the nights are not too bad for me at the moment despite being in so much more pain with the present flare up. I heat up my two microwaveable pads. One has a gel in and the other a kind of mud which I bought from Lidls. Trying to find some more they are good. I put one of these near each each shoulder or arm. I have one or two beany pillows to put near my hip or knees. Then I put my splints on my arms and hands so that they are supported. With the Pain Patches and a couple of Paracetomols (Can' take Co-codomol with Buprenorphine Patches) I am usely away with the fairies within the hour. But last night, it was almost every hour until 3 in the morning. Getting up to go to the loo. Can you imaginehaving to get out of all my supports to get to the loo in time?
Now you know why I am called Joyful. With all this going on I have to laught at myself.
Hope you all have a good day

Dear Joy
I am sorry to hear that you had a bad night, because you do need your sleep, especially at the moment, to recharge your batteries, with all that is going on in your life.
I believe that stress can aggravate symptoms and can also cause fitful sleep.
I have no answers or suggestions unfortunately as to what you can do, as you seem to be doing everything already. Perhaps you may find the time for a nana nap today. At least you can laugh at yourself - we have to don't we? There is only one alternative isn't there so laughter is much better.
Hope your day goes alright.
Love
