HiNoeltone
It seems I am posting messages to everyone to say "I've had that, this is what I did". I might help but sometimes you an learn from another's experience.
It must have been about 10 months ago now and I had experienced a searing pain in the same area of my jaw where I had previously had an absess a year earlier, and about 3 months before that one.
I have never in mind life before experience absesses. Each time I was put on antibiotics. Anyway, this last time, I eventually made a trip to the dentist thinking about the money I was going to have to pay out for another series of treatment. I felt quite a fool when he told me there was nothing wrong with it. Sometimes you can just get face ache, he said.
Anyway, like you I just had to take more painkillers and after another week, it was worse and in actual fact the pain had moved up over my face to the top of my head. Fearing the worst I went to my gp. Turned out to be part of the PMR and I had to increase my steroids for awhile. So, all I can suggest is see your GP and see what he thinks. Don't leave it. It could all be part of the RA.
Good luck

Hiya
There have been lots of posts about jaw pain but I do not recall anyone actually having anything to help.
My jaw is incredibly painful and I cannot open my mouth much now. It only used to be occasionally sore, but now it is constant. Eating/drinking and especially talking are a major problem for me.
If you find assistance, I would love to know. I need my voice for work because I am a legal executive and provide advice to clients (over telephone and face to face). However, with an incredibly painful jaw, this is not a pleasant experience for me at all.

Hi
Although my husband does not have arthritis he has had a lot of problems with his jaw, clicking and sometimes he feels it may lock completely which is very scary for him.
He has been trying to get some help from the dentist and doctor's for about 18 months now, he has a guard he wears at night and had diclofenac and stuff but it doesn't seem to help. Anyway after some perseverence he now has an appointment for the TMJ clinic at the dental hospital. It may be they say there is nothing they can do but it may be worth a try to get a referral. I have read up on the subject and sometimes if things are really bad they operate or do an arthroscopy but I think they are reluctant as the jaw is very delicate and sometimes treatment can do more harm than good.
Don't know if this is of any help at all.

Hi I had the jaw pain I know how you are feeling its the worst poosible place for the RA I thought other flare ups were painfull but this was the worst experiance of pain in my life. I went to the AE at my nearest hospital as my regular painkillers ( I'm on morhine based patches which are normally great.) and steroids just not doing a thing to ease the pain. I was given a morphine injection and kept in for 3hours then sent home. Due to the morphine injection it eased the pain and allowed the flare up to pass. I spoke to the doctor about this and he said I did the correct thing as none of us should have to be in unbareable pain.0

Hi Issy
It is a nice surprise to see you posting. I have a feeling you have not been on here for some time. I hope that is because you have been feeling much better. I remember well your postings when you had that awful jaw ache.
I hope you have a good week end and the sun shines where you are, or at least it will be dry - it will soon be upon us
Luv

Hello, sorry about the pain you're in-I know exactly how you feel. I grind my teeth at night-have done for nearly 20yrs. I've been diagnosed with TMJ (Temperomandibular Joint dysfunction) which has led to OA in both sides of jaw. I went to my dentist initially and she referred me to a maxfacial surgeon. They gave me a mouth guard which helps a bit but I'm going to ask for further help as my rhuemy 'doesn't do jaws' There are things they can do including botox injections into cheek muscle (I have an enlarged right muscle because of the extra work-out I give my jaw) and arthroscopies etc. I take co-dydramol for the pain.
I also use hot compresses and when really bad, I just don't speak (hubby loves it ). Take care, hope you feel better soon.

Hello Eileen!!
Good to see YOU posting too
Don't you all have to agree that there should be better care for jaws. Blimey they are fundamental to eating talking - a lot of what us humans do!!!
It seems awful that each person seems to have to fight their own battle on the subject and some get fobbed off
Shut up Toni
Take care all

For what its worse when I was 14 my Orthodontist said that my clicking jaw would eventually turn into Arthritis when I was older, which at 14 seemed many moons away. Anyhows he told me to stop eating chewing gum/mints/boiled sweets and it has made a huge difference.
Our jaws need to move to eat but we dont need to chew chewing gum/mints seems trivial thing but honestly the pains had gone completely to what I did have.
Hope it helps!

Hi, My jaw clicks when I eat, but it don't hurt. I feel as if people can hear it when I'm eating out! Not nice for you, though and takes away the pleasure of eating. I can't think of anything constructive to say, apart from visiting the dentist as they may be able to refer you to the hospital for special treatment. Love Sue. XX0

Your dentist can refer you to the hospital dental department and they will create you a gum shield like boxers use to help you rest your jaws when you sleep. My sister grinds her teeth and I never have. But the soft flexible gum shields did seem to ease the jaw clicking I must have done in my sleep. As its harder to move the 2 jaws at the same time with the shield in. Although the shield is really soft and comfortable to wear. After 2 years I didnt need to use the shield anymore.

I thought I had arthritis in my jaw but an xray showed not actually arthritis but that my jaw was dislocating due to years of grinding my teeth causing a lot of wear and tear. It will click and sometimes stick so that I can't open my mouth wide enough to eat or ironically to let the dentist in! Lol! Joking aside when that happens it can be very painful. I was given some jaw exercises by the dental department and it works very well. If I start to get into difficulties I just do the exercises for a day or two.0
