Hiya Markc1 (or however you're spelling it, sorry!)

People can be so insensitive and why do they feel the need to tell you about someone else who has it "and copes wonderfully"?!

Tell them to shut their face :-)

Too right, Nina! Isn't it funny how it's only people who do not have it seem to think they know so much about it!
Just ignore them Mark & carry on talking to us on here!
    :)

Yes, sorry Mark, Pen and Joanne's replies are much more helpful than mine - go with what they say.

I'm not having a very good week (due mainly to the rain) and get a bit fed up. Will be better when the sun starts shining again :-) Promise.

    Hi Mark,

I hear it all the time both for me and one of employers, people always are worse, or just have a bit of an ache in a joint so think thats it..... sadly some will learn but they are not worth getting up set over. I think its because they don't understand and don't want to be asked to do anything, even if its only being supportive... People are odd and have no idea how to respond I guess?

Don't let it get to you though, Take care, Cris

    Hi Mark
Unfortunately there is always someone out there who knows someone who`s worse than you, copes better than you, etc... The longer I have been aware of my arthur, the thicker skinned I am becoming!!! (hmmmph it that a side effect??! )
I had a woman ask me why I was having a hip replacement when I didn`t look as bad as her mum was !!! I was going to ask her if she wanted to spend a day with me to see me limp, trip, cry in pain etc... but I just said, well I hope she is getting her hip done soon. and smiled so sickly sweet
Don`t let the #%*@#%@* grind you down. They`re not worth the effort!!

Mmm... people hear the word arthritis and think of it as the achy joints that most people get when they get older due to normal wear and tear. Most don't understand that what you are talking about is an actual disease, an illness where your body is literally attacking itself. Most comments like that are down to lack of understanding and yes, it's the usual "you don't look ill" attitude. That why places like this are so important. I was told last week by a colleague that it was because I work too hard. I smiled sweetly and just thought that there was absolutely no danger of her ever being affected if that were the case!

Don't let silly remarks from people who don't understand get you down. My mum nearly decked a traffic warden a few weeks ago for questioning why she was in a disabled spot, he made a hasty retreat when my dad hobbled up to the car!

    Hi,

Another favorite but annoying comment is 'you don't look ill' or 'you are too young'

Just because at first glance you may not look as if you have anything wrong people think you can't be in any pain.

Yup and the "but you're so young" as well. Everyone thinks they are experts. If they get really cheeky then I give them the whole shebang. I'm only warming up, but as soon as they hear MRSA you can actually see the blood running out of their faces  I never thought I'd be glad to be saying that! Just shows you what this Forum can do to lift one's mood. :D

Hi Mark, I met a relative the other day who I hadn't seen for some time. She asked how I was and I told her about the OA/RA and her comment was,''well you are 62 now and you've got to expect some aches and pains, everyone gets achey niggles as they get older''.Because we don't look unwell and try to carry on as normal, people don't realise the pain we are in. :( And arthritis isn't just an ''old persons'' disease.I would like to say to all these people who just dismiss the disease, ''walk in my shoes for a day and see how you feel''.They just don't know how severe the pain can be.That's my moan done for the day!!Sun just coming out so perhaps we'll have a bit of warm weather to cheer us up. Breane. :)
