Hi all
Can anyone give me some advice of how they felt if they had to go on low dose morphine, I have been on DF118's and they aren't really doing anything for me and my GP has given me Tramadol but said it probably wouldn't be much different and in about 4 weeks he would probably put me on low dose morphine.
Tramadol are making me feel a bit strange, last time I had them I was really hyperactive and this time I'm having trouble sleeping but don't take any after 2pm, as long as I can get through work it's ok.
What are you experiences of low dose morphine please, does it make a difference and how does it make you feel?
Many thanks in anticipation

Hi
I personally would not tkae morphine. I was on liquid morphine Oramorph for an non-arthritis injury about 3 years ago. It is very strong and I found it very hard to come off it. I felt spaced out most of the time and got to a stage where even the slightest of pain I would take a dose rather than try a Paracetamol or Tramadol.
If you can at all avoid it then I would recommend don't go down that route.
Everyone is different though and what might not work for one might be the opposite for another.0 -
Hi Scarlett
I have recently moved onto morphine and I feel much better in myself and have much better pain control. I am having a good night sleep, previously I was lucky to get four hours together. I was on 200mg Tramodol S R 12 hrly and up to 8 Solapdol, I was in great deal of pain and looked and felt like a Zombie. My G P started me on 10mg morning and evening and gave me Oramorph to use for breakthrough pain. I started Friday night and by Sunday the Zombie feeling had gone and I was sleeping through the night. I am now on 20mg and feel human again my mind is clear!!!, I haven't noticed any side effects and only have to top-up occasionally. I was nervous about moving on to morphine but it was definitely worth it. Good luck Fay0 -
Ask your doctor about Buprenorphine Transdermal Patches they come in 5,10,20mg. I have been on them for about 3 years now. Started of on 5mg and now on 30mg. You apply patches to arm once a week and they release painkiller straight into the blood stream. I think they are morphine based. Since I have been on them I cut down my pain killers dramatically I used to take 8 Tramadol a day. Now I only take extra pain killers or steroids when I have a flare up. The patches seem to work for me and the pain is still there most days but it is endurable, unlike before when I would be crying because of the pain. Since being on the patches I have flare ups and after a couple of days of steroids it settles, very rarely do I need to take extra pain killing tablets only when really bad. I had one bad flare up on my jaw which did need Morphine but apart from that the patches are a god send for me. In my mind I feel happier because I'm not pill popping pain killers every 4 hours. Hope this helps.

HI
I was on morphine sulphate 20mg morning and night and oromorph for breakthrough pain. I would recommend it to anyone who is struggling to control their pain. I was taking cocodamol, diclo, amitryptiline etc.. before the morphine and still in tears with pain . I had no problems with feeling spaced out whilst on it and still drove etc.. After my op I reducd the dose slowly and was completely off it 2 weeks after I reduced the dose.
We all respond to medications differently, so I would keep an open mind about it, if your current meds do not help. I was a bit worried about taking morphine, but the doses are small, but enought o help with the pain.
Good luck

Many thanks guys for you responses I think you have made it clearer for me not to be scared. Not getting nearly enough sleep with the Tramadol and it's only working to a certain degree so will ring GP in a couple of weeks like he asked and talk about Morphine.
Thanks again for your time and patience

hi scarlett, ive tried the patches(as mentioned)but they made me so ill,i lost 2 stone in weight.sickness, migraines just couldnt function.
in feb my gp put me on morphine,10 ml twice a day slow release zomorph & i have oramorph liquid for break through pain.
i still take the full dose of ibuprofen 400m 3x aday & full dose of cocodomol 30/500 4x a day plus 40m amptripyline at night.
the pain isnt completely in control but i wouldnt miss a dose as im in so much pain without the full doses.
i do find im sleeping better since being on the zomorph,i still wake on turning over but find i can get back off easier.
i still seem to wake about 2.30am then i get up to move around, then im awake again at about 6am,get up for the loo, then i seem to sleep for another 4/5 hrs.but its better than nothing.
id say i do sleep better so its worth a try,i think its a the word morphine that puts the fear of god into some.
my mum said to me its only used in hospital to finish people off  NOT TRUE. good luck hope it gives you some releif. debsx0 -
Hi scarlett
I was using a low dose of liquid morphine for a while called Oramorph but it did nothing to help me and my doc seems to keep me off opiad related meds as they don't seem to make any difference.
I saw a pain management specialist last week and she sems to think maybe the dosage was too small and for the doc not to rule out opiates which is interesting.
Good luck0 -

Hi Issy
Reading about your experiences with these patches. I have worked up from 10s to 52.5 and now back to 20 mg. The only problem I seem to be having is blistering underneaththe patches. I was told to change every 4 days, but I am ripping them off between 2 and 3 days because of the itching. I just praying that I haven't become allergic to them. Seems to bring out my psoriasis blisters on my arms, a place where I never used to get problems with it. Do you get any problems? It will be a shame if I do have to stop using them.

Hi I have had no problems with the patches at all. The only thing I dont like is the fact that you are limited where you can put them. I would love to have them on top of legs but doctor told me must go on top have of body to work. Sorry you having blisters I hope you havent managed to get a reaction to plasters.

Treating with Betnovate Cream prescribed for the Psoriasis bit which are very few thank goodness. seeing gp this afternoon and hope he can suggest something else until I see Pain Clinic Consultant next week.0 -
Hello Joy
I found a forum on these patches and you are not alone with becoming allergic to them - lots of people were saying that, mind you that does not help you much. One person said that they moved on to use temgesics , a pill which goes under the tongue and dissolves, these are still buprenorphine.
