Hi again i read the posts everyday and they have helped, at least I now feel I am not alone i have been in touch with a couple of very nice members. My problem is my voice, ears and thoat it is driving me mad, I posted about this when it started, I had a spot in my throat and an ear infection. Well i thought it was an ear infection after seeing the specialist he says it is OA but as he is ENT doctor that was it end of story. My voice is getting worse it is very horse most of the day now and my ears have pain in them and feel like they are wet all the time strange feeling . I wondered if anyone else had this. I have read others with similer problems but they all seem to have RA. in the last 9 months i seem to have really gone down hill i had my knee replaced last year and my hip a couple of years ago but i didnt feel so run down, I have OA in my shoulders, neck, fingers , toes, other knee . I am really feeling down and my doctor has just retired so that isnt helping but to be honest he just said it was the OA when ever i asked a question and was not interested in advising me . Well that was a moan and a half but I really need some help it is driving me mad. you all help on a daily basis reading your posts keeps me going. all the best to you all .............sandra

Hi Sandra
I know how you feel, Just about every part of my body seems to be affected by ra and pa and now I am adding oa to is.
At least you might get some better answers by having another doctor. I was always specific about having my own GP all the time but he has semi retired and I can never see him. I have also had problems with my throat and intend getting that checked up when I go to gp next week. As I suffer from hayfever though and this can affect your ears and throat it is very difficult to decide what is what. I only have to start talking and my voice goes husky and then I lose my voice completely. Very awkward when on the phone. I try to gargle as much as possible with a soluable aspirin. That can help. There are also some pills I take which you need to drink plent of water with because if you don't that can irritate the laryrinc I can't spell it very well. Anyway, I hope you get a really good doctor soon who will help you more than the last one. We need their support at times like this. I don't know if you feel like me though, I feel that they are fed up with seeing me and think I am always moaning about something. This is where the OH comes in useful if you have one. I always take him with me because he is my spokesman and he knows how I am feeling and how I am suffering.
Goodluck. all the best

Hi Sandra
Lots of people get throat, jaw and other strange bits don't they.
YOu must feel a bit at a loss if your Dr has retired, but even so you will have to go to the Dr and gets some tests done. You can have OA and RA or lots of other combinations anyway and I know at last one person with a jaw problem who was told it was OA.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
Take care

hi,sorry for all the pain that ur in.
im the same,i too have oa affecting both my knees, hands, shoulders neck most joints.
i have limited mobility in my neck 70%
i went to the gps with an ear infection & it took 1 lot of antibiotics,1 lot of drops then steriod drops to clear it.
when i went back to get it checked as i still had ear pain my gp said i have oa in my jaw too.he told me to mention it to rhymy on nx visit which i did & he didnt seem interested.
im now waiting for appointment with pain clinic.
my painkillers dont touch the jaw/ear pain.
there are a few threads from magenta about oa of the jaw, might be worth a read through.
hope u get some releif soon. debsx0 -
Hello Sandra
Sorry to hear your suffering so much, long term pain is so awful and I understand how you feel about diagnosis from None Rheumy doctors. Been there bought the tea shirt. AS you have probably read I have Ra and have arthritis of the throat and voice box. Over the years I have sufferd bad with my ears. I am told reliably that you can-not get arthritis in your ear bones Hammer Anvil and styrup or is it just they haven’t seen it yet.
OA can effect the jaw, your jaw joints are very close to your ears and cause the ear ache because of the inflammation and swelling in your jaw.
I don’t know if OA can go into the throat but assume it can, it can anywhere there is bone but if you have inflammation in your jaw that could cause your throat to ache. I assume you haven’t got thrush or other throat problems. Take care

Hi Colin thanks for your reply , I find it hard to get the doctors to listen and they seem to think once you have been given meds for the OA you dont need to know anything else . I am lossing my voice most of the day at the moment and last night my ear was really painful i dread to think how bad it would be without my meds.. I read your posts, I am sorry to hear how bad your throat is . Doctors dont seem to understand how lossing your voice affects people , I just got the joke about my husband will enjoy it . again thanks for advise all the best ...sandra

Hi Sandra,
Sorry to hear you're still suffering. I don't have RA but OA in jaw. My jaw pain has flared up again and I forgot how bad it can be. I'm due to see my maxilliofacial surgeon on the 27th when (if I'm brave enough!), going to ask for help with the OA. They've told me in the past that they will only treat my TMJ but I'm in so much pain that something needs to be done. I'll let you know how I get on. I also have problems with my ears. I get tinnitus and sometimes I can't hear properly and they then 'pop' and I can hear normally. I've been referred to another local hospital about my lump on my upper mouth and I'm also going to ask them about the whole OA thingy. We've got to keep pushing the drs! Please take care and hope you feel better soon,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I too have notice my ears feel damp - it sounds silly but that's how they feel. I've never though to mention it before. I also have an extremely dry throat most days and put it down to the medication. Make sure you drink lots of fluids. I'm always clearing my throat. My skin has also become very dry and itches at night. I have to use lots of moisturiser on my arms and legs otherwise I end up scratching all night. Are you taking amytriptline? I think that may be the cause of my itches.
Take care and I hope someone comes up with a solution and you start feeling healthier.
