I feel so daft - and in pain!

Hi All,
I went to the hosp today for my MTX injection and my hubby drove as my toes still not better despite the injection. As I was getting out of the car my knee gave way and I fell, ended up sprawled over the car park with a kind woman rushing over to see if I was OK. I managed to get up (with help from hubby who had to practically lift me up). I limped in to see the Nurse who looked at my knee which by then was significantly more swollen than it had been - she thinks I've damaged the ligaments, I can't put any weight on it and it hurts - alot. Also got scrapes and bruises on my hands, other knee, elbow and bottom as well as cuts on my toes (I was wearing sandals). I've just got back from hol in Portugal and was due in work - I don't think they'll believe what happened! I've been ordered to rest up today (luckily hubby works from home so can look after me) but I am in agony - can't find a comfy position to sit or lie in... So feeling a bit sorry for myself today although my pride has healed remarkably quickly from massive humiliation of being sprawled on the floor (prob due to the kindness of everyone)!

poor you!
what a visit to the hospital .... mind you, at least you were in the right place ...... wrong time though!
You take it easy and do rest up. The more rest you get then the less time it will take to heal.
Have you tried propping your leg with pillows? I amaze myself with how many uses I can find for a pillow other than putting my head on it
You didn't mention if you had any strapping on your leg. If not I would suggest going to see your GP to get a second opinion and advice on the best way forward, that is if you can get there!
as for work - they will have to believe you. If not then they can send someone to visit you and see for themselves!
take care & sending you healing hugs

What a shame for you. Please try not to be embarrassed, it happens to the best of us. When my symptoms started last year the first thing to happen was I was changing my 3 year old in her room, I was crying the pain was so bad. I lost the feeling in my left leg, fell and peed everywhere. You should have seen the state of me when I had to phone my Grandad to come and get me, my daughter and my son who was 6 months (hubby had the car that day) to come and take me to the Dr. I couldn't even look at the Dr I was so ashamed.
But now, I think it's funny. Yes it was awful but I laugh about my reaction. I was like a hysterical banshee and had to be dragged by an 80 year old to his car!
I find sitting on the floor in the lotus position very comfortable. I'm here now on my kitchen floor with the laptop on the chair0 -
Ooh Eckstar your post has cheered me up! Sorry to admit that your banshee description has made me grin a bit!
Thank you both for your kind words, I am currently lying "in state" on the sofa with one leg propped on cushions and the laptop on my tummy on another cushion, coffee table pulled near and a stool by my head for my cuppa and TV remote, don't know where hubby is going to sit later onHave taken extra anti-inflammatories and painkillers and will take some tramadol when I go to bed... The Nurse gave me a tubigrip bandage but I can't seem to keep it on right and it rolls down my (chubby) thighs cutting off the circulation! So it's off for now but I will put it on if I get up at any point. I might go to GP tomorrow and see if they can do anything for me.
Thanks again, KT0 -

Hi KT, so glad I cheered you up. I know some people find them useless but I bought a TENS machine last month. It was only £20 from the chemist and I use it everyday. The electrical charges are uncomfortable but as it stays on becomes pleasant and then you only feel those and not the pain. I use the pads on the sorest part (not what the leaflet says) and find it has made a big difference, especially in the mornings. Although I have it on max, you just get so used to it, you don't notice. Might be something worth trying.0 -
sorry to hear of your fall but you were at a good place and had plenty of helpers. and i hope you work is understanding to your situation and you recover soon best wishs joanneJoanne0

Hi KT, I hope you soon feel better, try to not feel too embarrased though, my husband was in a&e one day, he was discharged to come home but when I tried to stand up I fell over, couldn't get up and had to have 2 nurses to help me up, ended up on a trolley, had a CT scan, as I was feeling dizzy, had to stay in over night, the nurses will telling everyone how I had fallen over      love Jaspercatxx0

Hello, What a way to start a visit to the hospital! Still at least you could get the leg looked after straight away. Its so embarssing to have a fall, isn't it and it gives you a nasty shock.
I'm glad your husband was with you and is looking after you now. Hopefully it will soon feel more comfortabel.
Take care and lots of love Sue0 -

Hi KT
I bought a knee support from the chemist that fastens with Velcro – then I can adjust it according to how swollen my knee is.
Glad you've stopped blushing now, I suggest you have plenty of rest and give your knee chance to recover. D'you think you need another holiday to help you recuperate?
Hope it's better soon.

What should have happened after your fall:
The good news:
TREATMENT?
Rest, ice and steady recovery program.
The bad news:
RETURN?
Between 4 and 12 weeks.

oh you poor thing. i hope you feel more comfortable soon.
exkstar, i've done a similiar thing, peeing mean!
during a really bad flare up, i'd managed to get into bed only to need the loo, so after much ouching and cursing under my breath (husband was asleep!) i got out of bed and struggled down the hall to the toilet, sadly couldn't get there quick enough, you can guess the rest!! it's horrible and embarressing. but i can laugh now!
oh and the tens machine, i have one that i used to use for my hip, i wonder if it might help my knee? might have to try it later...0 -
Hi All,
Thank you so much for your kind words! I am going to look at a Tens machine and will def see Chemist about an adjustable knee strap. I am seeing the OT tomorrow anyway for a planned appt so might speak to her about it too. I went to work today despite my hubby's protests - only stayed a few hours but just wanted to catch up a bit after my hols. I got back to my sofa and ice pack by 2.30 though so plenty of rest... Off to a meeting tomorrow then got a GP appt so will be taking the afternoon off for more RICE (thanks Joseph - I think it will be more than a few weeks before I'm back to sports though seeing as I haven't done any for about 5 years!).
I have happily totally regained my sense of humour over this - had a good giggle at work today!

I ended up on my face yesterday, my ankle went down a dip as I was stepping off the ladder, had to crawl up to house on my knees, it happens to us all.
re: the Tens machine, I brought mine in Superdrug, it does work although as joints get worse it takes a lot longer before I see a benefit and it wears off quicker. Typical times are 1 hour on my elbow for a benefit of a couple of days easier feeling, not total painfree.
Some joints are past its use. But then I hadn't used it for a while and decided to and did get some benefit so maybe some other factor that we aren't thinking of comes into its use?
