Hi

I have just read in this month's A. Care magazine about a study into complementary and alternative medicines, conducted by the Arthritis Research Campaign. They found that fish oils are most effective for RA, and capsaicin gel for OA. I have never heard of this gel, but have looked it up and discovered that it is made from chilli peppers, and I think is only available on prescription.

Has anyone else heard of it or tried it ? I would be interested to know,as it was given 5/5 on a scale of effectiveness.

There is information about the study on the ARC's website on www.arc.org.uk.

    Hi Heather
    Thanks for replying.
Did your doctor recommend it, or did you request it ? Also, does it have a burning feeling as it is made from chillis?

    Thanks Tracey

I agree, anything is worth a try. Some things work for some people and not others, but I am open-minded about alternative treatments.

I noticed that Val from the Helpline Forum recommended this gel to someone back in February. She said that it could be bought from a pharmacy. Maybe you could give her a call Joan....Ange.

    Hi Joan

I've also just read this in the mag and was very surprised :!: I asked my Dr. about it years ago only to be told that it was for nerve damage only. I might try again might be a big help now that I have nerve damage too.

    Love

I found capascin cream didnt work for severe nerve damage to my hand. The day after you use it, when you immerse your hand in water (washing your hands/have a bath) still makes your joint sting. Didnt found it worked so after a year or two dont use it anymore.

Hi Joan I have advanced OA in both knee caps and was prescribed it, I found it didn't do much other than give me the feeling that I had dipped my knees in chilli paste(now theres a thing!), one time was 3 in the mooring, I woke up with a start to find my right knee on fire, the odd thing was the last time I had applied it was around 2 in the afternoon and it did nothing until then!, didn't find it stopped the pain one bit.

Hello, I'm glad you find it helpful, as its a cream I'd be tempted to try it, but I'm not usually a fan of alternative medicines.

If you find something that works for you, thats great. Love Sue
