Uncontrolled RA/PA and surgery.

My arthritis is considered uncontrolled because I've reacted very badly to Dmards and only take diclofenac and co-codamol. (I would point out that I have a history of reactions to medications - don't want to put anyone else off taking them).
My Rheumatologist has said that if I have surgery (my shoulder joints are destroyed and my right knee is bone on bone) it will cause a bad flare that could last for months and so therefore does not recommend surgery. However, having seen both a shoulder surgeon and a knee surgeon they disagree and say that they can't see that the trauma of surgery would necessarily cause a flare-up.
Has anyone on the forum had experience of surgery whilst their arthritis has been uncontrolled? I know everyone is different and everything is a risk but knowing of someone else's experience would be helpful. Many thanks. Dianel.

    Hi Dianel,

    How awful for you :(

When I had my knees replaced I had a flare after the general anaesthetic - from what I understand you're less likely to have a flare if you're awake when they operate  I know it's not an attractive option but it is the way surgery is going these days anyway. It may be worth you making enquiries if you feel you can face it.

I've been told I have no choice but to have local for all future procedures due to the arthritis in my neck - when that happens I'll report back.

    Sorry Dianel
I have not experience of this just wanted to offer my support and hope you can sort something out. Talk about between a rock and a hard place. If it was me though - I think I would maybe just maybe opt for surgery....maybe :(
Take care and do let us know what you decide.

Hi Dianel mine was bone on bone in my knee before they got around to replacing it (had to argue for it ... a lot!) and it was best thing they could have done. The pain was horrific and you could actually hear the bone crunching. Therefore in my circumstances I would have taken the risk of the flare up. Hope all goes well.

    Thank you all for replying.
I hadn't heard that it could be better not to have a general anaesthetic Linda so will keep that in mind. Please do let us know how you get on with any more surgery.
Yes, Frogmorton, I am between a rock and a hard place. I've had dire warnings from the Rheumatologist about not having the Dmards and what will happen to me even though my Doctor wrote to him telling him how ill I was with the last medication I tried. I'm just taking my chances and hoping I make the right decisions.
It's really heartening to hear that you're pleased with your operation MrsDalloway and long may it continue. Again, many thanks for replying. Best wishes to all Dianel.
