hi,ive got PA and ive been quite well the past couple of months till i was in the sun 3weeks ago.i was wearing factor 50 on my face arms and neck as i was out in the sun for a few hours.the next day i came out in a red rash were i had been exposed to the sun.then the itching started i was going mad with it,ive got scratch marks all over my arms from scratching.the funny thing is my legs are itching too and i had them coverd up.i went to GP,she gave me a different antihistamine to the one i take for hayfever.it didnt make much difference, went back to the gp as my face was realy bad and i was trying not to itch it..he gave me some cream wich did help a bit.he told me to ask rhuemy if it could be my medication making me photosensative.rang rhuemy,he said didnt think so but i now have to have a ANA blood test to see if ive got an arthritis that makes me sensative to sunlight.i just wondering if they testing for lupus or if theres any other type of arthritis that can do this.any ideas please.

I have become photosensitive since starting Hydroxychloroqhine which is one of the DMARDs, so it is possible it might be your medication. I do know that several of the meds for RA can cause this as I have spoken to several people with the same problem recently.
I get the red rash (prickly heat) which becomes very itchy and also get a funny sensation after being in the sun...feels like drops of water on my skin.
Using a high factor sun protection does seem to help a bit but find it better not to sit in the sun for long periods. Just a little at a time.

    Hi Redpoppy,

My sister has Lupus and has an angry red diagonal itchy stripe over her face when she's been exposed to the sun. Normally it's a brown patch of skin but it is there permanently. The rash comes out on other parts of her body too.

I think this is typical of lupus rashes - in that it's evident even when not in sunlight and permanent but only itches after exposure. If anyone thinks I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.

Does this sound like your rash?

    Luv Legs :)

hi joyous, yes i do think some of the sunblocks make your skin unable to breathe properly there for you get prickly heat.i have been researching a make called piz buin.they have some products that claim to help your skin to breathe whilst protecting you from the sun.might be worth a try. :o

    Hi
Just come back from holidays and for a few days got 'prickly heat'. It is cased by oil based lotions which do not allow your skin to breathe, then when you sweat the lotion gets into your skin causing a reaction and rash. Have you tried aloe vera??

I use Aloe Vera gel on my prickly heat...for me it helps to calm it down...takes the itchiness away.
Try also using sun lotions for sensitive skin.
The normal ones and the water resistant ones make my rash come out straight away.
