hi folks, ive got my mom booked in for a visit from the social care people to come and assess her and her home to see if there is any more gadgets or equipment they can give her.
she had the basic rails in toilet, portable chair ect several years ago but now her mobility has got dramatically worse ive asked them to come and see her again.
i was just wondering if there is any equipment, gadgets etc that anyone has recieved or what you can ask for, that you can reccommend or know what she maybe entitled to, that may help her around (in and out the house) as i have this feeling they wont tell us what we can have,we will have to ask!! im asking for a kamode as she cant vist people if they have a upstairs toilet.
my mom has paid for a stair lift herself and i did ask about the problems she encounters in the bathroom as for years she hasnt been able to get over the bath to have a shower-but the lady told me they wouldnt do anything like that unless the person cant stand up!!!
lastly she is on the minimum disability allowance and cant get anymore as her and my dads pensions income go over the limit - BUT WE WONT GO THERE ITS A SORE 'POLITICAL' SUBJECT :x !!!
thanks in advance for any tips or advice and apologies for the spelling!!

    Hi Tutz
Will you be there when they come? That would be helpful i think. They should look at all aspects of her life from personal care to cooking to getting in and out of the house. Hopefully they will be there to help - not save money so they should be guiding yoYOU.
    Good luck!

Hello, You should get someone who looks at your Mum as a whole and assesses what she can and can't do. They should be able to advise you about what they can provide ie a commode should be easy, but a shower harder, although they should be able to advise you about getting one and some places arrange for the person to go and try out the equipment like a shower before spending as it may not be suitable or she may dislike it :!: They will also provide hoists if needed. Anything they give you is on lone for as long as your Mum needs it. If they finance a shower I think they can put a claim in on the estate.

I used to be a Care Worker and thats how I know how things work here in Norfolk. Some places have different policies and so I'm sorry if I'm mis-leading you. Keep pushing and check you get what you need. They can provide hospital beds or just a grab rail to help get out of bed. Wont go on anymore :) . Love Sue

I can't remember a lot of the details but my mum and dad got their bathroom converted into a wet room. it might be worth asking.

A friend of mine got her bathroom converted last year because she could'nt climb in and out of the bath. Her and her husband own their own house and are living on quite a basic pension. She was able to get a grant to cover most of the cost of the renovation. There was'nt any talk about the grant people taking over any claim on the house or anything like that and it all went very smoothly. It would be worthwhile getting in touch with your local grants dept to get some advice from them. It did'nt have anything to do with social services but they did send someone out to see her. Worth a try. Good luck.

Hi, I know in this area its easy to get commodes, as they are delivered by social services in their large vans, then an OT will come out to set it all up and check its safe to use, putting a written risk assessment in her file. Thats how this area, Norfolk, works. Of course not all areas have the same systems. I used to work in Care. Its really amazing what you can get, and the Occupational Therapist should suggest certain things too. I hope you get what you need, as it should be their for you. Love Sue
